A Trap By Tradition Souls In A Golden Cage takes place in the year 1981, aristocratic Boston, Massachusetts, America centering the lives of the protagonists: Esmeralda Blanchard ( Esme ), 16 years old and her double first cousin once removed, Jude Richard Adams ( Jude ), a 33 year old litigator, who are forced in an arranged marriage by their families. Esme, despite initial disagreements and barely recovering from brain cancer, looks forward to her marriage, knowing that Jude was a nice man, but he's still stuck with the thought of his ex girlfriend, Rebecca Giulia, who tries to overshadow Esme in every way possible from pointing out her lack of feminity and weak and fragile appearance. Also, other family members pity for Jude, while his mother, Desiree Blanchard, remains aloof of anything pitying Jude. Esme despised this, because she really hoped for a newer and a differently perfect life with Jude after years of emotional abuse from her own family. But it seems like there's been more mental burden ever since. She completely lost hope in the fact that her marriage was going to be any better. The thought that for Rebecca, even if not dating, Jude still had feelings and hung out with her, shatters Esme, and her relationship with Jude starts to get distant over time. Yet, the marriage has to go on. After a few more weeks, Jude feels sorry for his partial infidelity and wishes to work things out by arranging a romantic candlelight dinner for him and Esme in their own bedroom. Esme is impressed when he surprises her, but what was supposed to be a romantic dinner turned into a drunken reckless infatuation, ultimately leading to parenthood, which initially wasn't their plan till a few more years, despite a great want for it in both of their cases. Esme is at complete crossroads, having to make a hard decision, choosing between her education and motherhood.
