The whole village (Knuckles, Amy, Tails, and Sticks and the other villains) played a prank on Sonic by pretending to be the legendary Evening Reaper (a being that was said to take anyone to punish those who do harm). They wouldn't stop teasing him and scaring him with the Evening Reaper thing until one evening and that was the day things took a bad turn when the 'real' Evening Reaper showed up and took him. We never know This is a kind of behind the scenes on what happened. I don't know what happened but this is what I think COULD have happened.
