She Stayed for Me
Before I knew what sacrifice meant, my mother was already sacrificing everything for me.
She endured an unhappy marriage, worked countless jobs, survived a terrible accident, and eventually left everything familiar behind to give her daughter a better life.
We arrived in Lagos with almost nothing.
But Mama made sure I never felt like I had nothing.
She gave me education.
She gave me comfort.
She gave me opportunities.
Most importantly, she gave me her love.
She fought for me when I was too young to understand what she was fighting against.
But somewhere along the way, I lost my way.
As I grew older, the little girl my mother had sacrificed everything for became someone she barely recognized. Friends, bad choices, partying, mistakes, and decisions I wish I could take back slowly pulled me further away from the person she had hoped I would become.
And with every mistake came another piece of my mother's heart breaking.
Now I'm left with one question:
Can a girl who has disappointed the woman who sacrificed everything for her find her way back?
This is not a story about a perfect daughter.
It is not a story about a perfect mother.
It is a story about sacrifice, mistakes, love, pain, forgiveness, and the long journey of becoming better.
Because sometimes, the person who loves you the most is the person you hurt the most.
And sometimes...
home is the person who never stopped waiting for you.
