Since entering the service of Downton Abbey in 1910, Thomas has survived through ambition, manipulation, and a razor-sharp wit. Feared by many and trusted by few, he spent years conspiring alongside Sarah O'Brien, their poisonous friendship leaving misery in its wake. Yet beneath Thomas's cold exterior lies a secret he has guarded all his life-his love for other men in a world where such feelings could destroy everything he has worked for.
When O'Brien abruptly departs, Thomas finds himself alone. With no ally and no purpose beyond his daily duties, he resolves to keep his head down, but the loneliness becomes unbearable. Desperate to rid himself of the part of himself he believes is cursed, Thomas first attempts to take his own life. When he survives, he turns to a dangerous "treatment," injecting himself with an unknown substance in the hope of changing his sexuality. Instead, the injections leave him ill.
The only person to discover his secret is Downton's new lady's maid, Phyllis Baxter. Newly arrived to replace O'Brien, Baxter initially earns nothing but Thomas's suspicion and hostility. Expecting judgment or blackmail, he lashes out at her. Instead, she responds with quiet compassion. Refusing to abandon him, Baxter persuades Thomas to seek help from Doctor Clarkson, who treats the poisoning caused by the injections and helps nurse him back to health.
As Thomas slowly recovers, an unexpected friendship blossoms between two people who know what it means to carry painful secrets and live under the weight of past mistakes.
Their friendship deepens into something neither of them anticipated. Thomas is left questioning everything he thought he knew about himself. Can a man who has spent his entire life believing he could only love other men find himself falling for the one woman who never tried to change him? And can Baxter convince him that love is not about who the world expects you to be, but about the person who finally makes you feel worthy of it?
