America, 2085 The United States has fractured into several warring factions, each with its own vision of how society should be rebuilt after a catastrophic collapse. The old world-one of political corruption, environmental decay, and economic inequality-has crumbled, leaving behind a harsh new reality where survival is no longer about simple resources but about power, control, and the will to endure. The "Mindforge Trials" are a brutal, government-sanctioned competition where the strongest minds and bodies are pitted against each other. It's a spectacle-broadcast across the remains of the country, drawing in masses of viewers who place bets and cheer for the participants. The Trials are held in massive, secretive arenas known as "Forge grounds," hidden deep within the wastelands of old America. The trials are a mix of physical combat, psychological challenges, and strategic puzzles designed to break down the participants. Winners are promised power, wealth, and influence, while losers are discarded, their minds and bodies shattered.

There are moments that pass-and moments that change the shape of everything. Across the Veil of Moments is a collection of twenty standalone stories, each unfolding at the fragile edge where choice, time, and consequence collide. Spanning science fiction, fantasy, horror, romance, dystopia, philosophy, satire, and quiet human drama, these stories do not share a single world-but they share a single question: What happens in the instant before something becomes irreversible? Within these pages, gravity fails for six minutes and leaves humanity exposed. A kingdom survives by forgetting its own name. A ghost refuses to rest until unfinished work is done. A city sells memories until love breaks the system. A single seed cracks concrete and reminds the world how persistence truly works. Each story is complete, self-contained, and unafraid to end where it must-sometimes with hope, sometimes with loss, always with intention. This is not a collection about heroes saving the world. It is about ordinary beings standing at thresholds- between seconds, between decisions, between who they were and who they can no longer avoid becoming. Written with clarity, restraint, and emotional precision, Across the Veil of Moments invites readers to pause, step closer, and look through the thin places of reality-where the smallest moments carry the heaviest weight. Some veils are crossed. Some are only glimpsed. All of them leave a mark.

The Giver is a children's novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which is at first presented as a utopian society and gradually appears more and more dystopian. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the twelfth year of his life. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness," a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. I rewrote the ending of the novel for a school project and thought I'd share it:) let me know what you think.

Considering just how many people were in that crowded station, Bex couldn't say what it was that compelled her to look around at the precise moment she did. Instinct, perhaps, or the innate sense of being watched. In any case, as she slowly turned her head, she felt...strange. Almost as if she'd drunken too much of the special "punch" Alex liked to make for celebrations. She felt the same heaviness she often experienced after the potent drink had made its way through her system .... When Bex finally looked into the piercing blue eyes that were watching her from across the room, however, all lethargy seemed to cease. She was suddenly aware as she'd never been aware before, as though some previously dormant part of her was waking up for the first time. All at once she was conscious of the fact that it had been years since she'd had a proper haircut, that the clothes she was wearing weren't even hers, that she wasn't nearly as confident as she should've been in her ability to carry out the mission. But then, as the bright blue eyes narrowed slightly and the tanned male brow puckered infinitesimally, those thoughts dissipated and all that was left was the realization of OH, MY GOSH, HE'S WALKING RIGHT TOWARDS ME... [NOT A WEREWOLF STORY]

For the past eight years, I've lived in fear, on edge, and have never known what is coming next. Life has consisted of three things: hiding my secret, feeling alone, and having no one to run to (except for the people who share my secret with me, of course). Sometimes I think about that one, last moment, when we were just normal little kids. It feels like it was a million years ago, before the one night that changed everything. Before the vilicus came into play, when my family was so normal and happy, when Apoch was still here, and when I didn't have to wonder if I'd ever get to see him again. You know what I was afraid of back then? I was afraid of telling my parents that I had broken the window on the side of our house while playing baseball with Apoch, Cyrus, and his friends. That was as scary as life got back then. But after that night, life got a lot scarier.
