Mexico City, December 11, 2002. Alba Luna Cuautli, a skeptical psychology student, and Xavier Ortega, a reserved Spanish scholar, find their lives forever entwined when a mystical earthquake at the Tepeyac hill shatters the boundaries of time. Pulled through a rift of ancient whispers, they emerge in June 1718-a world of rigid castes, Inquisitional shadows, and untamed nature. While they struggle to survive under the guise of a married couple, a predator stalks the Viceroyalty. Fray Tomás de la Cruz, a nihilistic alchemist who has usurped the identity of an Inquisitor, has discovered Coacalco: a secret prison beneath the Cathedral where the Mexica deities have been held in stasis for two centuries. His goal is to drain their Teyolía-the very essence of life and memory-to fuel his own immortality and control his desolated Golem children. Guided by Metztli, a cynical indigenous healer, Alba must awaken a dormant power within her blood to heal the dying soul of a nation. Meanwhile, Xavier must cast aside his privilege and learn the merit of the blade to protect her. If they fail to stop Fray Tomás, the deities will perish, and the future of Mexico-their home-will be erased from existence before it is even born.
