It was because of the lie that she had told Valentina to tell him immediately after what the Jets had done to Anita. But she could not really help but tell that lie about Maria,she had been ambushed by the Jets in a way that had upset her greatly so she had lied. Now she regrets doing that because it cost her best friend the love of her life. If only she had not told that lie,she wishes she could somehow be able to take it back.
