In the town of Mystic Falls, everyone has a role to play. Elena is the doppelgänger, Tyler is the hybrid, and the Salvatore brothers are the tragic heroes.
And then there is Mirabella Lockwood.
As Tyler's younger sister, Mirabella is the girl in the background-the one who doesn't possess a supernatural bite or a magical lineage. While the world around her is consumed by ancient wars and epic loves, Mirabella is content to stay invisible. She is used to being the afterthought, the girl people look past, the one who feels like a placeholder in her own life.
Then Klaus Mikaelson arrives.
To the rest of the town, Klaus is a monster to be feared or a villain to be outrun. But for some reason, the Original Hybrid turns his gaze toward the one girl no one else bothers to see. Klaus doesn't treat her like a shadow. Between sketches in his notebook and whispered conversations in the dark, he treats her like a person-someone with a voice, a mind, and a fire that the rest of Mystic Falls has ignored for too long.
Mirabella knows she shouldn't be drawn to him. She knows he's dangerous. But in a world where she has always felt like a second choice, Klaus is the first person to make her feel like she's the only choice.
But as Mystic Falls continues to turn into a graveyard, Mirabella begins to change. A strange, cold restlessness is growing in her blood-a dark hum that has nothing to do with the Lockwood curse and everything to do with a history she didn't know she had.
While Klaus thinks he has found a quiet distraction in the "human" Lockwood girl, Mirabella is starting to realize that the shadows she's lived in are far darker than even an Original could imagine.
