          scene  ii.  The  rest  of  the  play  was  evidently  contributed  mainly  by  his
          collaborator  or  collaborators.  If  there  were  two  collaborators,  one  of  them
          presumably wrote the farcical prose scenes, the other the comic scenes at the
          courts of Rome, Germany, and Vanholt.
          Despite the differences in execution which permit us to discriminate between
          its Marlowan and its non-Marlowan parts, Doctor Faustus possesses a genuine
          unity of conception. This will be demonstrated in section 8. Most readers have felt
          that  Marlowe’s  must  have  been  the  mind  responsible  for  this  conception;
          certainly, the theme of the play is highly characteristic of him. So much is this
          the case that we feel the work to be essentially his, even while we deny that he
          wrote  more  than  a  part  of  it.  His  collaborator  or  collaborators  evidently
          subordinated themselves to him, working to a scenario for which he was mainly,
          or  even  entirely,  responsible.  We  do  them  no  great  injury  when  we  speak  of
          Doctor Faustus, as we commonly do, as Marlowe’s achievement.
