Flashback :

“Mr. Jeon, you’re the only person I know who can help me pay my debts”

“as much as I want to help you, Taeyeon, your debt is really huge. I need to think as a businessman”

“dad, can we help her?”

“how long have you been there, Somi? Were you eavesdropping on our conversation?”

“I heard she needs help with her debts. Can we help her, dad?”

“Somi, my baby, we will lose a lot of money if we help her”

“nevertheless, dad, I want us to help her. We can earn money though”

“Somi, thank you so—”

“in return, I want Chaeyoung to be mine” Somi gazed on Taeyeon with a determine face

“what do you mean?”

“look, auntie. I love Chaeyoung. I really like her. I want us to get married”

“she's the only person I want to marry. Let's say you’re selling Chaeyoung to us. Just name her price”

“dad”

“yes, baby?”

“do you really think Chaeyoung will agree?”

“we already made an agreement with her mom, besides she's your girlfriend”

“I know, but I don't think she wants to marry me”

“listen, Somi, we already bought her, so you own her from now on”

“how sure you are?”

“because we have money. There's nothing in this world that money can't buy, regardless of whether it's a person or a thing”

Mr. Jeon's assurance made Somi feel hopeful as she smiled widely.

Chaeyoung's POV

“Ajumma” I called the old granny who's slowly walking towards us

“who is she, Chaeyoung?” she asked briefly and smiled widely at Mina

“is she your girlfriend?”

I quickly shook my head as I felt my throat went dry at the sudden question from her. I didn't know old people could be this straightforward. I saw in my peripheral vision how Mina softly giggled.

“she's my sister, ajumma, she's Mina”

“oh, I thought she's your girlfriend because you never brought a girl here”

I scratched my nape “ajumma” I whispered in embarrassment

After a few minutes, we went inside her house. Mina didn't change at all; she's still as friendly as before.

While I was preparing our food, they were at the table talking about stuff. They just met, but it seemed like they had known each other for a long time.

Based on Mina's reaction, I know the granny was teasing her. I can hear their bickering from the kitchen.

I took my steps towards them with a tray of food in my hand. As soon as they saw me, they stopped talking.

Did they just gossip about me? I almost rolled my eyes at them.

“what's with that attitude, Chaeyoung?” Mina asked and helped me to put the foods on the small table.

“your personalities are quite different from each other.”

“you barely smile, Chaeyoung, while your sister is so goofy”

“she's been like that, Ajumma. Her smile is like a birthday. It only happens once in a year”

“Mina”

“did you see that, Ajumma? She glared at me”

“I didn't”

“you did”

I gave Mina a death glare to make her stop and thank god, she listened.

Mina's pov

Chaeyoung was already in the car while I'm still waiting for ajumma. She asked me to talk to her privately for something important.

“do you love her?” I turned my back when I heard an old voice from behind.

“who? Chaeyoung?” she nodded her head in response

“yes, I love her. She's my siste—”

“I know your relationship with her is beyond sisters”

I froze in my place as I gazed at her with bewilderment in my eyes upon hearing her. How did she know that? How close are they?

“Mina, please, make her happy. Fight for her, and love her even if it's difficult”

“she’s been suffering since she was young. Her heart has been filled with melancholy”

“she may look fine externally, but she's been carrying weight in her heart”

I don't know what to say. I was too dazed at the moment, so I just let her talk and talk.

“she never felt real elation in her life, and I pity her for that. She might be strong on the outside, but she's vulnerable inside. She needs someone to rely on”

I was amazed that she really knows Chaeyoung despite the fact they don't meet often. I admire her for loving Chaeyoung this much.

Even myself, I didn't know that Chaeyoung has been suffering from such sorrow. I once saw her crying when she got drunk. That was the first time I saw her expressing herself.

Now, I have more reasons not to leave her side and protect her the best that I can.
