"There must be another goddamn way," Evan grumbles, striding directly to the home bar on the corner of my penthouse's living room. It's one of the few things left in the place, along with several other furniture and brimming, cardboard boxes. Him and Olga have already moved most of my belongings to my soon-to-be new home in rural Black Forest Creek. It's a mansion called "La Cueva", which means The Cave in Spanish, and it belonged to Gian. They told me it's quite mesmerizing since it's dwelling inside a natural cave overlooking the ocean. My dear father, Gian, bought it when he made his first millions selling virgins and suicide bombers in Afghanistan. That motherfucking bastard. I'm glad we made sure he's rotting in fucking hell, my subconscious snarls, a blood-stained scalpel held tightly by her hand.
Billionaire, crime lord, human/drug trafficker and pedophile, Gian DeLuca, started his "business" in Southern Asia, and then expanded it to Europe and USA. He sure knew how to make a pretty penny from the most beautiful woman and girls he could steal from the streets or their own beds while their families were asleep.
At least that's one of the few things Gian's lawyer — I meant to say, MY lawyer, Saul Trencinni, has told me about him. Unfortunately, we've had to stay in contact since Gian's tragic death and I've been doing my best to gain his confidence. I have no doubt in my mind that he knows more than he's willing to say and if I have to remind him with his own blood that I'm the boss now, and he'll only answer to me, I'll fucking do it. In one of our brief conversations he told me La Cueva was Gian's "safe place" when he stayed in NY. I threw my head back and laughed at that, because who the fuck knew the devil himself needed somewhere to feel safe and sound.
Gian used to say it was somewhere he was positive none of his enemies or the authorities could ever find him. When I asked Victoria about the place, she told me she had never heard of it before. But she warned me that the place must be a devil's lair and to stay away for what's left of my sanity... but I can't, because I might find some of his deepest and darkest secrets hidden there. And believe me, the bare thought of living where Gian once did, doing whatever the fuck Lucifer ordered him to do, makes me want to rip my skin off and bleed to death to make sure none of his poisoned blood runs through my veins anymore, but these innocent lives are depending on me, even if they don't know me yet, I'll do anything for them.
I'm sure we can do all of this without "dating" Rico, my subconscious appears, a dull expression on her face as she sticks her pointer finger in her mouth and heaves, acting as if she's going to throw up.
"Rico is a complete imbecile! I doubt very much you'll be safe with him! He's an arrogant, narcissistic prick!" Evan continues blabbering, aggravated by the situation.
"There isn't another way," I state indifferently, taking my coat off and plunging my exhausted body on a beige loveseat that's heading straight to Goodwill in a few hours, "Trust me, I'm not ecstatic about it either."
He grits his teeth, handing me and Olga a drink, "Are you going to tell me what the hell happened between the two of you? Or do I have to call Victoria?"
Someone has an attitude today and it's not you, Kat, what a surprise, my subconscious jokes at the wrong time.
I notice Olga's body tensing at the name of my mother. Does she know about Evan's feelings for her?
"Rico and I were kids," I reply with no hesitation, my dark, unwavering eyes on his, "It's nothing important." I lie effortlessly. I've turned into a fucking good liar, but there's still a sharp pang of guilt vibrating through my chest. I know I shouldn't hide this from Evan and Olga, especially when we'll all be around Rico often and our lives might depend on him some time; but telling them the truth about what a real, piece of shit he is is plain humiliating.
