And so, you went to your table. Nice, clean, spacious, quiet, and above all, empty. A whole world just for you to enjoy your meal in peace. Or perhaps not.

You got jinxed, with your brother rubbing the palm of his hand in your face, wildly and ecstatically going on, "Hah! Thought you could avoid me, eh? I don't think so, little sister!"

"Taroooo, stop! I'm trying to eat here!" You whine at your sibling's contact, neither one of you acknowledging your surroundings as the pair of probable-brothers inch closer and also sit down at your table. It wasn't until Taro's assault was finished that you both noticed them, as well as other students exchanging judgmental side-glances to the other. Some students didn't care, some students laughed innocently, and some quietly mocked. But that wasn't a problem, luckily. What was the problem is that two strangers were in your midst, and that your brother was being himself as usual. Okay, perhaps Taro being his regular bodacious self didn't bother you that much, but you were still hungry.

"So, now that I get a good look at ya, you're [L/n] [Y/n], aren't cha?" Luka reached his arm out over the close distance of the table to shake your hand. "You seem like a nice girl."

Taro let out a gruff cough, "No, she isn't--Ack!" You had stomped on his foot with your own. Silly Taro, he never stops.

"And you seem like a nice guy, Luka," You half-smiled, shaking his hand lightly. It felt like time froze as you studied the boys in front of you. You could see Ruki on the side of his brother, eyes widening with a light pink dusting his cheeks. Your eyes then went directly to Luka, who seemed to share the same reaction. What are they getting all flustered about?

You see Taro's features. Smug as ever, as soon as he realizes what these two young men were thinking. Of course, this was to also hide his overly-protective big brother senses.

You take your hand away, and time seemingly resumed its natural course.

Almost immediately, Ruki cried out, throwing his hand in the front of you after he ran to your side of the table, "I-uhm! Miss [Y/n]! Pleased to meet you as well! I'm Ruki!" He bowed, with his hand still high and dry in the air. You reluctantly took it, as you are taken aback by his sudden behavior. Taro, meanwhile, still smirked to himself, happily consuming his lunch.

Lunch soon ended, and then your other classes were to be finished soon as well. By the time they did, you walked out of your last class with sleepiness in your eyes. You instinctively rubbed them, despite the nagging, subconscious lesson Taro has attempted countless times to teach you to resist the urge. He was always adamant that you shouldn't rub your eyes, especially if you hadn't washed your hands yet or touched something that wasn't pristinely cleaned, because you could possibly get an infection.

Taro had always kept a close and lingering on you throughout your shared livelihoods together. As your elder and only brother, Taro had always made it clear that he'd make it his will to protect you. He knew he couldn't protect you from everything, he knew he couldn't preserve that innocence and precious chastity you had, and he knew he couldn't protect you from straying away from him eventually to live your own life. You sensed this air about him early on in your youth with him, and while he seemed content, you knew he'd always try to remain adamant.

Because that's what stubborn elder brothers do.

And that stubborn elder brother was waiting for you to drag your tired and weary limbs to the school parking lot, just outside of the entrance. You trudged ever closer to the doorway, and could narrowly see Taro through your half-lidded vision. Taking long, ungraceful strides, you made your way towards the male, only to be halted by an unfamiliar hand on your shoulder. Your eyes shot open, as you were just about to kick the absolute fuck out of whoever this person was to touch you---

"Wait, wait, wait! Miss [Y/n]! It's me! It's me, Ruki!" Your knee stopped midway in its flight towards your quote on quote attacker, whose hands were crossed over his stomach, waiting for the impact. Though luckily for him, you quickly went back into your normal and relaxed stance. Ruki sighed with a breath of relief, with a surplus of sweat trickling down his brow, "Sorry… I, uh… I did try calling your name. I-I really didn't mean to scare you, Miss [Y/n]!" He abruptly bowed, as if it were a display for you to show mercy.

And merciful you were, letting out a dry laugh and telling him to stand tall and proud once more, as well as, "And if you would be so kind, please drop the 'Miss'. I'm only seventeen, y'know. And well, it seems as though I scared you more than you scared me. So I apologize. Anyway, Ruki, what do you need?"

His eyes widened slightly, and then returned to their normal stature. The natural color in his cheeks made their presence known again, and he smiled cheekily, "Nothin'. Just wanted to say 'hi.'"

You waved each other off as you parted ways after that short exchange, as Ruki felt his phone vibrate in the fabric of his pocket, quickly checking it and abruptly cutting off the already small conversation in favor of hauling ass to the other side of the school. He looked so surprised when his eyes lit up at the bright screen of his cell, mulling over the notification he got. Despite the abrupt ending he gave you, he politely bowed and bidded you goodbye anyway.

He seems like a nice guy, you thought.

And so, in the car on the way home with Taro, blasting your favorite music on the radio, you smiled to yourself, and smiled even more when Taro asked you the question you've used to always dread:

"How was your first day of school, [Y/n]?"

It was the one of those rare moments where you really and truly meant your smile. Your eyes sparkled as you told him about your day, however mundane some details were, because the thought of having forged a new friendship elated you. It elated Taro as well, as he knew you needed more people to call your friends other than himself. Taro felt partially to blame, as he kept you sheltered from most things after your poor parents' disappearance, so to hear your excitement in the possibility of having a new friend for yourself made him happy.

After all, being an antisocial wallflower was something you hated being. Being in your first class at the start reminded you of all the years of boredom and loneliness you endured, and even with Taro there, he was merely minimum support. But you'd rather have him than no one at all. Your first class made your morning and entire day special, as it was the first lively and enjoyable class you had in ages no matter the difficulty of the subject. Luka and Ruki were bonuses, and perhaps maybe even Mr. Shizen and his charming allure, too.

To see you happy, made Taro happy. Even though his ears strained in between hearing you screeching out the lyrics, and the high volume of the radio.
