Prologue

The world took a different turn in a matter of seconds. Jade's dreams and ambitions were thrown out the window in a blink of an eye, but she wasn't alone. The whole world was now on survival mode. Jade remembered the out break day perfectly and if she focused hard enough, she felt as if she was transported back in the past.

But it did not help to dwell on the past, like everyone else, she had to learn the hard way to bottle it all up. It did no good pondering such matters, besides, whenever she was on patrol (which was everyday), she knew that any minute she could die and leave Ellie on her own.

While Jade thought that Ellie was sound asleep in her dorm, Jade was bending backwards for one of her soldier-colleagues who was deeply in love with her. It can't be said she felt the same. Jade only wanted a warm body from time to time.

Noah pulled tightly on Jade's chocolate hair making her grunt as he gripped her waist; the handsome but indolent man knew that Jade did not reciprocate his feelings and would only sleep with him when she was in dire need of company, but even Noah knowing that, still did not mind. As Ellie would say, the man was completely blinded and would do anything to be with Jade, even if it meant that she was using him and him alone.

But without his knowledge, sometimes Jade would have her other lover stick her tongue between Jade's legs under the covers in her room.

After finishing, Noah collapsed on Jade in exhaustion and the two were laying in bed trying to catch their breath. Noah's blue eyes scanned the woman's sweaty body in admiration; her tone arms, her curvy body and strong legs made his heart flutter, while her quite large breast and heart shaped bottom would make him throb.

Playing with her hair between his fingers, he caused Jade to sigh, "stay the night, sleep with me just for today."

"I'd rather sleep alone." Jade replied coldly. Just a minute ago Jade was content in his embrace. "Besides, your roommate's gonna be back soon from his patrol."

"We can pull the curtains, he wouldn't see." Noah said in hopes that maybe just today, she'll change her mind.

With a tender kiss placed on his cheek, Jade dressed and left his room, leaving the man all in his lonesome.

Even though Jade is used to it, she hated her morning patrols. All she wanted to do was sleep in. She regretted contributing as a soldier for the Fireflies when she first met Marlene. But at the time, she wanted to occupy her time and forget her noisy thoughts, and protect Ellie in every possible way.

"I went to your room last night." Chloe interrupted Jade's thoughts. "You weren't there."

Chloe said in amusement as her eyes landed on Noah.

"I was...busy." Jade said as she cleared her throat, making Chloe chuckle.

"Relax." The woman's brown eyes met Jade's. "I know sometimes you...crave the men's genitalia in you."

Jade elbowed her friend playfully, "shut up!"

Chloe remembered the first day she met Jade. She was quiet and kept to herself a lot, rarely mingling with anyone. She was willing to learn everything and put herself in harms way just so she could survive. Chloe knew that Jade's extreme activity as a soldier was only to learn new things to protect Ellie, but she was doing it the wrong way. The more she did as a soldier, she took out her frustration by sleeping with a partner.

At first, Jade hated the idea of sleeping with someone, she found it only logical to pleasure herself as to not get attached to someone. But one night, as her and Chloe were out scavenging for supplies, Chloe couldn't take it anymore and spilled the beans. "I'm really fucking attracted to you, Jade. All I can think about is us. Us having sex." Chloe said to Jade.

Jade chuckled at her straightforwardness and undressed the both of them and made love on the cold dirty floor of the abandoned house. Chloe would get shivers whenever she remembered Jade's kisses all over her brown body that cold night.

But just like Noah, Chloe was another body count. Jade was never really in love. Chloe knew Jade was just extremely lonely. Besides them lusting from time to time, Chloe was the most trusted companion Jade had.

"No but really, who's better?" Chloe wiggled her eyebrows, "is it Mr. Perfect? You better say it's me, because I know it's me."

Before Jade could throw her a sassy remark, one of the Firefly soldier ran up to them.

"Yo, Williams! Marlene needs you, ASAP. She says it's urgent." The soldier said as he took Jade's post beside Chloe.

"Do you know what's it about?" Jade said as she hurried Marlene's way, not really waiting for an answer from the soldier.

"Marlene, is everything okay-" Jade swung the door open only to see Ellie covered in grime with tear marks down her cheeks.

Immediately Jade sighed, "c'mon tell me, what did you do this time? Marlene, whatever she did I can-"

"Your sister is bit." Marlene said plainly.

"What?-"

Jade's eyes traveled from Marlene to Ellie as her chest started to beat faster and heavily.

"I-I'm sorry, I sneaked out at night okay? W-With R-Riley and-" As Ellie rambled anxiously, Jade felt like she was getting dizzy.

With wide eyes and mouth gaped, Jade sat down in disbelief. "You...you got bit?"

Suddenly, Jade felt like she failed at everything in life. She promised her mother that she would always protect Ellie no matter what. But no, she was busy spreading her legs instead of checking on her sister. For a second, Jade felt so helpless, she felt like it was outbreak day all over again but worse.

"Ellie hasn't turned Jade, it has been twenty hours." Marlene said.

Jade's eyes met Marlene's as her eyebrows knitted in frustration. "She will turn in a few more fucking hours!"

"Riley...Riley turned in an hour." Ellie spoke up with tears in her eyes. Remembering the sight of her friend made her quiver.

"Ellie, where the fuck did you go?" Jade said as she stood up, anxiety starting to boil in her body.

"To the mall."

"Are you fucking insane?! I told you to never go there without me!" Jade shouted. "Now look! I'm going to lose you because you did something fucking stupid!"

Ellie was taken aback by her sister's raging eyes and sudden loudness. She never saw Jade that angry. To Ellie, Jade was always the cool sister whenever she wasn't being super protective of her. But this raging bull in front of her, was something new she's witnessing.

"Stop!" Marlene interfered before Jade completely lost her mind. "You're missing the point, Jade."

"The point that my baby fucking sister is about to fucking turn into one of those things?! Oh, excuse me for being so clueless!"

Marlene grabbed the girl and shook her.

"She hasn't turned in twenty hours, Jade. We know people turn less than 5 hours. Ellie doesn't have any signs of turning." Jade sighed and turned to Ellie, disappointed in her eyes made Ellie's heart skip a beat terribly.

"So what're we supposed to do?" Jade said hopelessly as her eyes traveled down to her sister's arm. The bite wound was still fresh.

"We wait." Marlene said. "I'll watch her and see if anything happens for now."

"No! I'll stay with her-"

"If you do that, we would only arouse suspicion. We need to keep this private for the mean time. Go back to your duties and I'll keep you updated."

Even though Jade wanted to be with her sister, she couldn't argue as she knew Marlene was right about this. With a loud sigh, Jade nodded her head to Marlene and cupped Ellie's face, placing a kiss on her forehead.

"Jade, wait-" As Ellie called out to her elder sister, Jade walked out the room and slammed the door shut.
