Daniel's P.O.V.
Carrying this girl is like carrying air. She is so light. I can't even to begin to imagine when the last time she had eaten was. Her cheeks look sunken in and the bags under her eyes are so dark, I'm afraid they may never go away even after she gets better. Looking at this girl, I feel the strongest need to protect her. A need to never leave her side no matter what. I look up as Sam and I approach the barn that we were currently using as shelter. I can hear Sam calling out for Dakota but my focus is on the girl in my arms. I bring her over to my bed, and lay her gently on my mattress. I back away slightly when I hear footsteps approach.
"What happened? Danny, who is this?" Dakota asks me as he's laying out a few of the medical supplies we've accumulated in the past weeks.
"I-I don't know. I found her on the side of the highway when Sam and I were looking for supplies. I checked, and she's not bitten, but it looks like she hasn't eaten in days and she was barely conscious when I found her. I tried asking for her name but I think she was too weak to answer me." I explain while I kneel down beside him. "We have to help her, Kota. We just have to."
I watch him sigh as he pulls out an IV bag of saline and a needle. I help him look for a viable vein, seeing as the girl is severely dehydrated and it's taking a bit for him to find one himself. I finally find one and slowly insert the needle, keeping it in place with some medical tape. Dakota hangs the bag off of the gate leading to the stall where my area is.
"Okay. This should get her hydrated enough to wake up. When she does, make sure she eats, but not too much at once or it will make her sick." He starts to pack up the rest of his medical equipment. "Keep an eye on her Daniel. She's your responsibility now."
I watch him walk back to the back of the barn to put them away. I finally let out a small breath of relief. We know that at least for now, she is okay. I sit in a small chair in the corner, my eyes never leaving the girl's face. I look for any sign of consciousness. My eyes begin to droop, the exhaustion from today's events finally start to catch up to me. I try to fight it, but it eventually becomes too strong to push
Lillian's P.O.V.
I slowly open my eyes, trying to adjust to the light. I slowly look around and realize that I'm no longer on the highway. I feel a sense of panic start to set in. Where the hell am I? How did I get here? I take in my surroundings a little more and finally notice another person. I take in his appearance for a few seconds. He has short black hair, and he's very muscular. For some reason, just the sight of him made me feel safer. The more I looked at him, the more I realized how attractive he was. But I told myself a long time ago that I wouldn't get involved with anyone anymore. I can't keep losing people. With much hesitation, I pull my eyes away from the boy. Only then do I realize that there is food and water sitting next to me. I stare at it for a moment before reaching for it. A voice startles me, causing me to pull my hand away from it.
"Go ahead, take it. It's for you." The boy beside me says, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. "I hope you like granola bars, because that's really all we have to eat right now. My name is Daniel, by the way."
"I'm Lillian." I grab the granola bar and water. "Thank you. I can't even remember the last time I ate, so I'll take anything you've got at this point." I giggle softly.
I pick up the granola bar and unwrap it before taking a small bite. My eyes nearly rolled back at the salty, chocolatey taste of the granola and within seconds, I have finished the whole thing. I blush when I realize he had seen me scarf down the food. My face flushed and I bring my head down. I instantly begin to try and make myself smaller. I am absolutely embarrassed. Daniel chuckles, a warm sound that prompted to laugh in return. After a few moments of laughter, we both stop and begin to look into each other's eyes. His eyes are so blue. I can see that he has a sense of innocence and insecurity to him still, even after everything. The way he acts so shy when I look at him said it all.
