Christmas, the only day of the year where being with someone you love is a must. It is where families get together, those who are far away from their loved ones do everything just to get home.
It wasn't the same for me though. Ever since my other mom went missing in action during her last mission, Christmas have never been the same.
My name is Winter Kim. I am the only daughter of Captain Jisoo Kim, a soldier of the South Korean military, and Jennie Kim, a business woman.
Two of the most unlikely people, meeting in an unexpected circumstances, falling in love in the most bizarre way.
It's been over a year ever since we heard the news. We didn't took it very well, especially my Mommy Jennie. She's been hiring different people just to help in finding my Mama but every time they come back, the news are always the same.
Everyone was giving up, they were hopeless including me, but my mom isn't one of them. She had this strong belief that Mama Chu would come back to us.
"As long as there is no body, I won't give up. She's just out there somewhere, we just have to look further." My mom stubbornly uttered. She tossed the paper on her desk and massaged her temple, clearly stressed at the disappointing report once again.
The agent collected the scattered paper on the desk and filed it neatly. "But Mrs. Kim, it's been 13 months. If your wife is really alive, she should've been here already."
My mom looked like she's shooting lasers from her eyes, she slammed her hand on the table and scoffed.
"I am not paying you to tell me that I should stop looking for my wife. I know she's out there somewhere, and as long as I don't see any parts of her body here then I am going to keep looking for her. I am willing to spend every penny, just keep looking for her. Now get out of my office." My mom retorted and waved her hand once, signaling the agent to leave.
I saw my mother pour some whiskey in a glass. She heaved a heavy sigh.
The stress is visible on her face, she's been taking some pills to help her sleep at night. Ever since my mama's disappearance, she's been frequently drinking. Whiskey almost looked like water to her.
"Mom." I said when I stepped inside the room.
She looked at me and gave me a tight-lipped smile. She just looks so tired, and it's breaking my heart to look at her like this.
"Aren't we going to decorate the Christmas tree?" I asked her.
It's almost Christmas, and our house doesn't feel like home unlike those years where Mama Jisoo would always initiate the Christmas tree decorating activity.
Mommy looked at the calendar on her desk and pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Oh right. Sorry about that baby, I didn't notice the date. You know I've been busy lately." She said to me and spread her arms, asking me to give her a hug.
So I did. I kneeled in front of her and gave her a hug.
She rubbed my back and kissed the top of my head. "How about we decorate the Christmas tree later? I'm just going to finish all this work."
I looked up at her and smiled.
"Okay." I said to her and kissed her cheek before I left her office.
Anyhow, while I am waiting for my mom to finish all her work, let me just tell you the story of how they met.
It was during the time when my mama, Kim Jisoo, is still in her military training. She was in the same class with my mom's brother who have coincidentally the same name as her.
