You were practically invisible at school.
And that was okay.
You didn't like being the center of attention. You hated when people went out of their way to talk to you. You never knew what to say back. Sometimes you'd say rude things and end up making enemies without even trying. You just wanted to be left alone.
When you were alone, you enjoyed playing video games on your PS VITA. Other times, you enjoyed playing mobile games or listening to music at full volume so people would leave you alone.
However, there were those few who didn't understand the message being sent when someone has headphones in.
Sitting on a bench at the park, you played Hyrule Warriors on Switch while you enjoyed the cool breeze. Your mom told you to go outside and get some fresh air instead of staying in the house on such a nice day. You begrudgingly complied to her wishes but didn't regret it once you felt the nice weather.
While slicing up monsters, you notice a person walk up and sit on the other end of the bench. You ignored them and continued playing until they scooted closer to you. You looked up, wondering if this was some weird way of attempting to get your attention.
"Am I in your way or something?" I ask. The boys with two tones hair timidly shakes his head and tucks his face into his shirt.
"Kenma!" You hear a male voice in the distance shout. Another boy, taller and with black hair was sitting on the ground in the lush green grass called out, making the boy beside you jump in surprise."Talk to her, dammit!"
The boy beside you grumbled as he crossed his arms over his chest.
You glance from one boy to the other before the boy apparently named Kenma, turned to face you."Um, hi." He said lowly.
"Hello, I guess." You shrugged.
"I'm sorry to bother you. My friend is forcing me to be social." He said, glaring at the boy who pulled out a red PSP, waving it around with a smirk on his face."Ah, you have an extroverted friend who wants you to be extroverted too." You say with a chuckle.
"Oh my god, I hate him sometimes. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get rid of him. So now I'm just stuck with him. He's cool, but he forced me to do stuff." He shrugs.
Growing concerned from his last sentence, you pause your game."Like what?"
"Eat, sleep, socialize," He lists a few things that weren't as bad as you though he would say."You forget to take care of yourself too, huh? My mom forced me out of the house cause it's such a nice day. I just wanted to sit in my room and play my favorite games." You reply.
"Really? What are you playing now?" He asks, eyeing your switch."Hyrule Warriors." You say as you show him the paused screen. A small smile grew on his lips.
The awkward small talk quickly grew into a passionate conversation about games and music that you two loved. You found that you both had a lot in common. You eventually turned off your game system to continue talking to Kenma, showing each other your favorite games, music, and animes to watch.
The next time you checked you phone, you noticed a whole two hours had passed.
"Wow, we've been chatting a full two hours." You say with a smile. He nods as he looks over to his friend who'd fallen asleep in the grass.
"That's Kuroo. He's the one who forced me to come talk to you. But I really enjoyed it." He smiled back at you with pink tinted cheeks."So did I." Your cheeks turn pink as well.
"Um, would you, maybe, want to exchange numbers?"
"Why? To earn bonus points with your friend?" You ask sarcastically with a smirk.
"Actually, I was hoping to earn bonus points with you."
His words shoot you in the heart and cause your cheeks to go fully red. Suddenly, he blinks and begins to panic."Wait, that came out wrong! I-I wasn't flirting, I swear!"
You giggle as you take out your phone and open the contacts page."It was cute so it's okay." The two of you exchange numbers and set your contacts before Kenma goes to wake up his friend. You smile as you watch the two of them talk before Kenma turned to you with a shy smile.
Kenma's POV
"So, it must've gone well since you two talked forever." Kuroo smirked at me when he woke up."Well, it wasn't horrible."
"Your cheeks say otherwise."
I felt my cheeks stinging and tried to turned away to hide it."So, what's her name?"
I looked back to her, seeing her playing her Switch again."(Y/N)."
"Awe, cute. Whens the wedding?"
"W-why would there be a wedding?!"
"You're making a goofy face and your blushing." He chuckled at me."N-no I'm not."
"Yeah you are."
"Am not."
"Are too."
"Shut up, you're stupid."
"Calling me stupid doesn't win the argument, Kenma."
The Next Day
Yesterday was better than you thought it'd be. When you returned home, you were smiling and holding your switch close to your chest like you were keeping your heart from jumping out of it. Your mother noticed you while she was on the couch and she paused her movie to talk to you.
"Did you have fun? Where'd you go?"
"Just to the park. It's was okay." You reply while avoiding eye contact.
"You don't sound like you had much fun. Was the weather at least nice?"
"Yeah...the weather..." You trail off, picturing Kenma in your head like you'd done about a hundred times on the way back home."Hm? Why are you smiling like that?" She giggles at you. You shake your head to make the blush go away and look at her sternly.
"I'm not smiling! Gosh, you're a pain sometimes."
She rolls her eyes.
Today, you prepare yourself for school as usual and bring a smaller, more discrete handheld system to stuff into your bag. Upon arriving, the first people your eyes land on are two familiar figures. One tall with black hair and the other is shorter with two toned hair and holding a red PSP.
"Kenma?" His name leaves your lips, surprising even you. He turns and gives a small smile when he sees you.
"Hey," He left his friend to come and greet you."I didn't know you went to this school, (Y/N). Why did you say so?"
"You didn't ask." You shrug. He rolled his eyes, making you laugh. You notice his friend smirk at you before turning to enter the school on his own. You and Kenma walked in together and he walked you to your class. You chatted for a while until it was time for him to go to his own classroom.
"(Y/N), would you wanna hang out after school?" He asked nervously as he played with his hair with pink cheeks.
"Did your friend tell you to say that? Or is this all you?"
"It's all me."
Your cheeks go red again and you let out a giggle involuntarily."Yes, I'd love to hang out with you."
"Cool."
He left your classroom with a smile, whispering a yes he thought he didn't hear. Your heart bounced around inside your chest and your mind was clouded with thoughts of Kenma all day long.
