I pulled up to my parents house with my friend Ashley and mentally rolled my eyes. We were here for our annual family barbecue, and who's car do I see parked in the driveway? My ex Dave. Looks like he was here extra early seeing as though he was parked behind my dad's car and my brother's was right behind his.
"Why is he here?" I asked agitated. Ashley just shrugged and got out of the car.
It's been five months since we broke up, but it feels like it never happened sometimes because everywhere I turn there he is. I put on a front most times acting like I don't want him around, but in reality I do it just hurts too much to be around him and not have him be mine anymore. Sighing to myself I got out of the car as well and made my way into my family's backyard. There I spotted my mom and dad, my brother Luke, a couple of aunties and uncles and my cousins scattered around and of course Dave looking fine as ever, but there was a girl standing next to him that I had never seen before. I know this nigga did not bring a date with him....to MY family's cookout!!
My suspicions were confirmed when I saw him grab hold of her hand and leaned over and kissed her lips. In a matter of minutes I went from shocked to hurt to rage. My brother must of seen it because before I could react him grabbed my wrist and dragged me into the house, through the kitchen into the living room since no one was there.
"Now Jalissa think before you do something crazy."
My brother knew me all too well. I was about ready to walk over there and snatch that girl up by her weave. I mean this is just some of the most disrespectful shit I've done ever seen in my life. I was pacing the living room, running my hands through my hair.
"Why is he here Luke?"
"You know that's ma's doing. To her he's still family." He shrugged, "I mean y'all were together since yalls senior year."
"Bu-" before I could get another word in my mother's voice interrupted me.
"There you guys are. Why are you guys in here? Jalissa you should be out there with your company."
"My company!" I said giving her a stank face.
"Yes your company. You know Ashley, Dave and his friend."
"I didn't invite them. That's your doing. I only brought Ashley with me. And I just honestly can't believe you would do something like that Ma!"
"That boy has been coming here since high school for this cookout. What was I supposed to do? Tell him no?"
"Yes that's exactly what you were supposed to do!"
"Jalissa I'm not doing this with you today." She said with a sigh and walked off back outside dismissing everything I said. Leaving me to have my own sigh and rub my hands down my face.
"You know I honestly thinks she likes him more than me." I said looking over at Luke. He just shrugged and said, "Come on let's just go back outside before she causes a scene like she always do."
Reluctantly I agreed cause the last thing I need is for my mother telling everyone that I refuse to come outside cause I'm in my feelings about Dave...cause she'll do it too. Once I made it back outside I spotted Ashley sitting at the table with Dave and his girl. Of course she would be over there, can't blame her though she is a mutual friend of ours. Can't try and make her pick sides. I wonder if she knew about ole girl?
But that's something to find out on another day. I threw on a fake smile and casually made my way over to the table.
"Dave! So nice of you to have made it. Who's your friend here?"
