Jay sits floating next to me on the couch in her family's enchanted basement with her little, almost transparent feet in the air, and her head where her feet should be. A song blaring from her ear buds, as the lights start to flicker Jay must be messing with the lights again... well it is the ghost thing to do, I think to myself ignoring it. Over the years Jay’s ghost and witch powers have become normal to me, which is a really good thing, otherwise she would be scaring me half to death every other week. She and her family are some of the small and unknown magical community in our town, though Jay says there are people like them everywhere and they may outnumber normal humans like me in just a few years. I have been walking past elf's with pointy ears and longer noses and fairies with pinched up faces in the halls for years...they just don’t know that I, Vladimir spark know enough to see the traits of their species.

Someone thrusts open the thick door of the basement and slams it shut, the hinges groaning from the force. The lights that are flickering speeds up,creating an eerie feel to the quite empty room, just the dark brown leather couch and the cherry wood coffee table. As slow, heavy labored feet fall down on the stairs to the basement. A shiver goes down my back as each foot falls with a slap on the stairs Her dad, must be her dad. The lights finally start to bug me as they start to buzz.

I take an ear bud out of her ear saying, “Jay cool it with the lights already! Being half ghost on your mom’s side is awesome but this is overkill. I’m not scared of your little light tricks anymore.”

Confusion crosses her face then a look of fear, she flips over and sits bolt upright looking past me with wide eyes. I am about to ask what is wrong with her mental state, when a cold laugh vibrates around bouncing off the burnt amber colored walls of the now icy coldbasement.

“Are you really that thick Vladimir that you thought telling me off last week would keep me away from my little sister?” Kurtis, Jay’s half brother says walking to the center of the room. He has been out of her life since she was 10, that was 7 years ago. He’s been back in town for about a week making my blood boil with all of his ‘I’m so much better than everyone else’ attitude.

“I can do whatever I want stupid. Just watch.” He says to me, his face contorting as he stares at Jay who tences “Jay, come here girl and accept your fate as my puppet.”

She stands zombie like, without any emotion and walks towards him. She walks towards Kurtis her only fear. A voice in my head says This is not right, you have to help her.

“What did you do to Jay?” I yell, standing up and grabbing her shoulder holding onto my brainwashed friend. Wanting nothing more than to have her back in her right mind and the feel of his angled face colliding with my fist.

She blinks as if coming out of a daze, making me sigh in relief. Terror stricken, she curls into my chest grabbing fist fulls of my favorite red V neck Tee. I wrap my arms around her to protect her, as a sudden surge of power radiates around the room coming off of the three of us, red and yellow in color spreading like fire around lapping at the walls.

“Just a little hypnosis for her own good...Such a weak mind Jay, mom is really slacking in training you. Then again I spent my childhood with My dad who isn’t a weakling like yours and don’t get me started on how insignificant Vladimir's dad-”

The room starts to shake with the amount of anger I feel, releasing Jay pushing her behind me towards the couch. Then the wonderful feeling of Kurtis’ face crumpling under my left fist sending him flying backward in a blast of the red energy. That’s the same color as when Jay practices basic spells with her dad... no it was all over the room you’re just seeing things Vlad. You're human.
