“…angels can become human, but doing so is the most serious crime of Heaven. By removing his or her Grace(divine force), which is a very painful process, the angel falls to earth and is then born to human parents. All abilities and memories of his or her angelic life are suppressed, although small amounts can be recalled instinctively. When the Grace is removed, it falls down to earth with the angel…”

“I have a theory.” Luxa’s voice startled Eli as he was reading the inscription in the book. Two days have passed since he woke up on her living room rug, and he’d taken to reading up on the lore of angels. He figures, if he as one, he might as well know something.

“Again?” he looked up from his book. “I thought we agreed on the angel theory?”

Luxa ignored his gibe and continued. “Remember the second clue? I think I know the answer to that.” She pointed at the book he was holding. “It says there, that when an angel removes his Grace, he loses all angelic memories and abilities, and is born to human parents. On your part, you lost memories, but wasn’t reincarnated. So my guess is, you didn’t do it yourself. You were sent down as punishment.”

“Is this another proof of my dickheadedness?” He’ learned the word from Luxa. It was one of the choice swear words she’d hurled at him when she opened her eyes to find him pinning her down on the landing –an event considered as a taboo between them.

She grumbled. “Would you tell your ego to hide for one measly minute so I can talk?”

He pretended to zip his mouth and nodded.

“It’s nothing about dick-headedness since angels are all dickheads by human standards. They don’t feel. The idea is, as an angel, you might have committed some kind of divine infraction.” He noticed her beginning to fidget and diverted his eyes.

“What about the Grace?”

“Well, since you aren’t actually reincarnated, my best guess is the dislodging of your Grace failed. So when you Fell, you still had it. Or part of it anyway.”

“You know, I dreamt about it.” His face was melancholic as he said this. He vividly remembered the terror and the sensory chaos of falling down a neverending space. “Falling.”

He saw Luxa freeze in response to his statement. He took one look at her and felt a pang of doubt. It was evident that she didn’t entirely believe the theory even if it was hers. She became cranky when he tried refuting her, but she became frightened when something fell into place. She was frightened now –almost terrified. “Where would the Grace be?”

She shook her head. “It falls down to earth with the fallen. It must be near, but it can be anywhere or anything.”

Eli nodded, almost absent-mindedly.

“You do realize,” Luxa muttered again. “That if you did not fall properly, you could still have some power in you –ability, whatever.” He watched her face light up in excitement as she said this. “I wonder what kind you could have been?”

“Guardian,” he answered, remembering one of the earlier dreams. “I was one of the Guardians.” He looked blankly at her equally blank face.

“Let me guess. You dreamt about it.”

Eli nodded.

“Air and light affinity then. One of the Grigori,” she muttered. Then in answer to his questioning look, “What? I read. ”

Eli imagined those little pieces fall into place –and they did perfectly. Almost too perfectly. “You do realize how frightened this all makes me, right?” She didn’t answer but he can feel her assent. “If I fell, angel or not, I did something to land myself such a punishment. Maybe that means I shouldn’t try to get it all back.”
