*DISCLAIMER: This book uses the characters from Shannon Messenger's Keeper of the Lost Cities book series. I did not create these characters. Also, I wrote the first chapter on a separate Wattpad account, and then forgot my password, therefor locking myself out of it (lol). So no, I didn't copy this from someone else (just a heads up)*

Sophie took a deep breath in. Her new school loomed menacingly over her blonde hair. She thought about her old friends. Friends. What if I don't fit in? What if the classes are too hard? What if the teachers don't like me? What if nobody likes me?

"Sweetie, don't worry. You're going to be so happy here," her adoptive mother reassured her.

"I'm not worried," Sophie said as she tugged out another itchy eyelash.

"Yes, you are. Do you really think we haven't noticed you attacking your eyes?" Grady, her adoptive father asked. Sophie mentally made a note to stop her telltale habit.

"Thanks, guys. I think I'm ready. I love you!" Sophie said. She started to walk up the steps of Foxfire High School.

"We love you too, kiddo!" Grady said. "Good luck!" Sophie smiled. I'm so lucky to have such awesome parents, she thought.

"Here goes nothing," Sophie mumbled under her breath. And with that, she pushed the glass doors of her new school open.

ooo

The first thing Sophie noticed was how clean Foxfire was. There was no fluorescent lighting that lit most high school buildings, no squeaky floors, no gross smells. It looked like something out of a college magazine. Wow, thought Sophie, the janitors here should get paid a lot. The second thing she noticed was that everyone here was very, very attractive. Uh oh. Sophie felt herself reach for an eyelash. NO! She scolded herself. She looked around. Where is the main office? Dang it! Sophie started to panic. She looked around. No one here looked approachable. She didn't even know her locker number! That was when she realized that she was standing in the middle of the hallway like an idiot. And that was when she heard a deep voice from behind her.

"Hey, can I help you? I don't recognize you from last year," the deep voice asked. Sophie turned around and almost smacked into a tall boy with dark hair and teal eyes, which sounded creepy, but actually were very nice.

"Uhhh..." Sophie was struggling for a question to form in her brain. Why can't I start any conversation?!?! Sophie thought

"Hi! I'm Biana. It's so nice to meet you! I love your hair. Think of me as your official tour guide here. My brother and I have been going here since freshman year. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Oh, also I love--

"I think what she means to say is welcome," The dark-haired boy told her, talking over his sister, who pouted when she was interrupted, but was obviously used to it.

"Oh! Thank you. That's very nice of you," Sophie said. She was surprised by the niceness of these strangers.

"Happy to help. As I was saying, before I was rudely interrupted," Biana glared at her brother. "I have a map of this school downloaded on my phone. You're a junior, right?" Sophie nodded. "Great! So am I! Fitz over here is a senior. Since this is a small-ish school, we'll probably have a bunch of classes together. Do you want me to text you the map?"

"Yes, please. I took three wrong turns on the way here!" Sophie held out her phone to Biana. "Just make yourself a contact."

"The main office will have your schedule, locker number, and dorm room number. Actually, I have a friend who works 1st period at the main office desk, and I need to get a phone charger from him, so I'll walk you there, if that's okay," Fitz said. He was being very sweet.
