Never Too Far Apart

I stared out the window as our car drove along the rocky Scotland road. This was the last place I wanted to be on a Sunday morning. I would rather be with Meika, my best friend. I remembered the day I told her I had to go to Scotland.

I approached her house, brownies in hand. She opened the door, grinning. She seemed to think that I came over to hang out.

"Mei..." I had said. "I'm going away for a year." The look on my best friend's face hurt my heart. "I'll send you letters though!"

Meika smiled softly. "Ais, we'll never be too far apart to be best friends."

The screeching of tires brought me back to my senses. We pulled up at a castle-like building, with turrets and flags. I walked inside, laying down in my room. I wish I knew what Mei was doing.

Meika sat at her desk, pen in hand. She didn't have a phone, so they'd have to communicate through handwritten letters.

'Dear  Aislinn,

HI! How is Scotland? I miss having you live next to me. The house is going up for rent. FOR RENT. I thought I would never see a sign in front of the Michael house. Anyway... it's really boring over here. James  misses you-- and I bet you miss him. I have to go. I hope to hear back from you as soon as possible!

Your best friend,

Meika'

Meika remembered the day when she figured out that Aislinn liked her brother. The girls were 13 at the time, so James was 14 (One year ago), and they had been playing truth or dare when she had asked Aislinn who her crush was. Ais had said, "Well... it's your brother, James." Meika had gotten mad, but felt so bad about it that she ended up setting the two of them up. They were (are? Meika didn't know-) a couple.

I ran to the mailbox. I had heard the postman coming, and knew that Meika was going to send me a letter. Sure enough, there was one there. I smiled, reading it I sat down at my own desk.

Dear Mei,

I miss you, and Georgia so much! I don't care how pretty it is here. And yes, I miss James. I'll text him later. Good news! My father said we'll only be here for 5 months. We can only wait!

Your BFF,

Ais

I ran to the postman's office, giving him the letter. "Here!" I grinned. Five months couldn't come soon enough.

Five Months Later

This time, as the car drove along the road, I was excited instead of dreading where it was going. Instead of going to my house, I ran to Meika's house. I knocked on the door, grinning as my best friend opened it. "Here!" I said. I gave her a book.

"What's this?" asked Meika. She opened it. "I LOVE IT!" she yelled, hugging me. I smiled. The book was a collection of every letter she had sent me for the whole time I was in Scotland.
