a/n: I'll tell you guys when to play the song, for a better reading experience
prompt: Jungkook and Taehyung are in love. Their only problem is that it's the 60s and being gay is socially equivalent to killing a baby. Which is just another way to say that most people are homophobic.
1965, San Francisco
It's the Saturday after senior prom, and Jungkook was currently laying on his bed, tossing up a baseball. He was wearing his favorite blue and black striped sweater, and some black pants. It was Sunday so he didn't bother to put any gel in his hair, since he wasn't going anywhere today. So his short black hair was looking a little messy at the moment.
Jungkook went to prom with a girl. She was a lovely girl, just not really his type. His type was...well,
"Son, Taehyung's here to see you! Get down here!"
Jungkook face lit up just at the sound of his name. He tossed the baseball to the side and hurried out of his room and downstairs.
He saw Taehyung standing by the front door, being questioned by his father. He was wearing a tightly knit green polo shirt and tan khakis, a pretty casual outfit. His black hair was longer than Jungkook's and a little curly. Jungkook really liked his hair, it reminded him of one of the Beatles.
"So Taehyung, how was your prom? Ya get to first base with her? Actually, you're a handsome young man, I can see you getting to 2nd."
Tae's cheeks turned a light shade of pink at the man's question. He shook his head, "Ah, n-no. We were just friends, she wasn't really my type. So we just got milkshakes afterwards and went home."
"Hm, well that's good too, keep your standards high. You need to find a good woman. And that's hard, especially in times like these." Mr. Jeon tsked while shaking his head.
"Times like what?" Taehyung asked him, tilting his head to the side a little.
"Oh you know, nowadays you got women wanting to work like men instead of taking care of their families. You got blacks thinking they're equal all of a sudden, and even worse is people are agreeing with them. And you got those damned homosexuals lurking around and spreading their disease around. The world's a shit show right now."
"Oh...yeah." Tae nodded, his gestures agreeing but his expression doing the opposite. That's when Jungkook decided to step in.
"C'mon Tae, let's go upstairs." Jungkook nodded for Tae to follow him.
The other smiled at Jungkook's father weakly. "It was nice to see you again sir."
Mr. Jeon nodded. "Same to you."
He watched the two teenagers scurry up the stairs until they were out of his sight. Then he went back to the living room to watch tv until his wife got home from a Tupperware party to cook dinner.
Upstairs, Jungkook closed the door to his bedroom, making sure to lock it as well.
Tae plopped down on the bed with a sigh. "I've never been too fond of your dad, he's kind of an asshole. No offense."
"None taken. My dad is an asshole." Jungkook scoffed. "This world is full of people who are sexist, racist and homophobic, but it's not everyday that you find someone who's all three."
Taehyung chuckled softly. "I'm just glad you're not the same way."
"So am I."
Silence settled in the room as Jungkook walked over and sat by Tae on his bed. Taehyung glanced at the slightly younger boy. "So, you and your date looked nice last night. She's very pretty."
"Yeah....but I thought you looked better." The older blushed at the compliment. Jungkook smiled softly and brought a hand up to move a strand of hair out of Tae's face. He then spoke, "I would've gone with you if things were different, you know that."
"I-I know. That doesn't make it suck any less though." Taehyung took in a deep breath then sighed out. "I just wanted to know how it would feel is all."
"How what would feel?"
"You know...having that special dance with your date. Like something you'd see in films. Where the boy twirls the girl around and then pulls her close and...and kisses her..." Tae got quieter as he finished his thought out loud. He looked down at his hands in his lap. "I just think that'd be nice to experience with someone I love. With you."
Jungkook stared fondly at the older boy, a soft smile on his lips. "Who's to say we can't have that special dance?"
Tae hummed in response, raising an eyebrow. He watched as Jungkook stood up and walked over to his dresser. On top of the dresser was his record player and a stack of all his favorite record. Jungkook went through the stack until he found the one he was looking for.
a/n: play the song now
"This is one of all time favorites right here. This record got released when I was still little, but I still listen to it all the time." Jungkook smiled to himself as he carefully took out the vinyl record and placed it on the record player.
Soon after he started the device, the sound of the music filled the room. Jungkook turned around with the same smile on his face and walked back over to Taehyung.
He held his hand out for him to take. "Dance with me?"
A tint of red crept back onto Taehyung's cheeks. He took Jungkook's hand and got up off the bed, letting himself be led to the center of the bedroom. Once in the middle, the two boys faced each other. Jungkook rested his hands on Tae's waist and Taehyung wrapped his arms around Jungkook's neck.
The two began swaying together to the slow and steady rhythm. Jungkook softly hummed along to the lyrics, he knew them all due to the number of times he'd heard the song.
Taehyung found his face flushing everytime he locked eyes with Jungkook, so he just decided to rest his head in the crook of his neck. He could feel the vibration in his throat as Jungkook continued to hum along to the song, singing a few of his favorite lines out loud.
"For it's true~ you are my destiny~" Jungkook nuzzled Tae's cheek as he continued to partially serenade him. "When you hold my hand, I understand, the magic that you do~ you're my dream come true, my one and only you~"
As the last verse of the song played, Jungkook pulled away from the older so that he could grab his hand instead. "Ready?" He asked softly, to which Tae nodded in response.
Just like Taehyung had imagined, Jungkook brought his arm up- bringing Tae's with it- and gently spun him around in a circle. Taehyung let out a cute giggle as he spun, making the younger coo aloud at him.
After spinning him, Jungkook pulled Taehyung back in close. Now they were face to face. Tae wanted to hide his face again so that the younger wouldn't be able to see his pink cheeks. But this wasn't possible because Jungkook brought a hand up to his face, letting it rest of his cheek. His thumb trace soft lines across his cheek, down to the corner of his mouth and across his bottom lip.
Jungkook caught Taehyung's gaze, not letting him look away. Then said, "You'll always be my one and only Tae. Whatever happens...I love you."
The only words Taehyung could think of as the music came to an end, were the ones that he meant the most. "I love you too Jungkook. Always."
The two boys shared fond smiles before leaning in and finally connecting their lips in a soft and chaste kiss. It was short but sweet, leaving both of them with smiles when they pulled away.
Even though the music was no longer playing, the two boys stayed together in the middle of the room, hugging one another tightly. And for the small time, they felt at peace. They felt like the rest of the world and all of its evil and judgement just didn't matter to them.
In this moment, they had eachother. And that's all that mattered.
