The sound of rain pitter pattering across the cobbled streets outside my window wakes me up, causing a few groans of annoyance to escape my lips. It was my day off today so why on earth did the weather believe it was necessary to wake me up?
After tossing and turning and trying to get a few minutes of more sleep, I decide it's time for me to get up. Instead of getting out of my bed like a normal person, my stupid ass rolls onto the hardwood floor with a loud thud. Great. Just great. The sound of someone rushing up the stairs makes me roll my eyes, knowing my Dad heard me thump on the floor. Just as I had expected three knocks sound on my door.
"Valerie, honey, you okay in there?' He asks in his annoying cheery tone. Gosh, he is always so jolly and loud in the morning. I hum in response as a 'yes' because I was still too sleepy to converse with him. And once you initiate a conversation with him, you will regret it because he just likes to talk on and on about anything and everything. "I didn't think you would be awake today, work is off on a Sunday for you, no?"
Well I didn't think I would be awake too father, great minds think alike.
"The stupid rain was being too loud" I grumble as I frantically start making my bed. Please don't answer, please don't answer. I am in no mood to converse with you parental unit 1.
"You don't appreciate nature enough Valerie, we don't get much rain in California so consider yourself lucky". Oh no, his stupid nature talk will begin. Quick run away Valerie. Run away! "Think of the rain as a metaphor hun, why did God decide for the rain to fall upon us today-"
Before he starts lecturing me on the frikkin' rain I interrupt, "Yep gotcha Dad, Imma go take a quick shower then I'll join you for breakfast". I am so grateful there is a bathroom in my room, at least he can't stop me twenty times to have a random conversation as I'm going to go to the toilet. Walking towards my en suite bathroom, I throw my messy, bed hair up into a bun. I have a quick, cold shower to wake myself up, trying to ignore the goosebumps forming all over my shivering body.
After showering, and brushing my teeth, I open my door and instantly get engulfed by the smell of waffles and pancakes . Call me basic or whatever but it's my favourite breakfast.
The floorboards creak under my feet as I rush down the flight of stairs with my mouth practically watering. The dining table is set with three plates and a tray of pancakes and waffles. My stomach leaps in excitement because I can't wait to feast on these bad boys. I sit down on my chair and my Dad's girlfriend, Joan, does the same.
A lot of people feel bad for me when I say my Dad has a girlfriend because they instantly assume we don't get along or that she's a bitch. But it's the opposite really. Joan is so sweet and she's like a best friend to me. Plus, I'm happy for my Dad - he deserves someone as kind as her.
"Good morning, how did you sleep?" she beams at me with her infamous grin that could light up anyone's world.
"Like a baby, you?" I reply.
"Well I barely got any sleep, your father wouldn't let me" she huffs in annoyance which made him pop his head out of the kitchen and smirk.
I widen my eyes and cringe, "I did not need to know that"
She furrows her eyebrows and began to think. And then realises what she had said "Oh God no, that came out wrong. I mean he was snoring too loudly. Jesus Valerie why would you even think of that? I would obviously not tell you that" She rambles making me chuckle and put my hands up in defence.
Soon my Dad joins us and we all end up eating and talking about random things for about 20 minutes. The sound of my phone ringing breaks us all from our conversation. I pick my phone up and smiled seeing the name of my best friend making my swipe to answer instantly.
