"Get out! Now!"

I hurried past my parents as fast as i could. My mom had tears in her eyes. I wondered if she had a say at all in this decision.

I slammed the door behind me. Shoving my hands into my pockets, i found my car keys, cell phone, money. True necessities in life. I climbed in my car, locked the doors, turned the key, and i was out of there. Without thinking, I ended up in the parking lot of Grand Canyon High School, my high school, which was completely empty due to the fact that it was going on 1am on a warm summer night. It seemed more like July or August than mid-June.

I got out of my beloved, beat up, faded red Jeep and found the track. I ran fast, I ran hard. I ran until my feelings slipped away.

-----

"Hey."

Feeling came back. Memories, thoughts, all flooded back. Slowly sitting up I remembered the past night, how quickly it came and how quickly it was over. Directly in front of me was a girl with short, blond braids, sitting criss-cross. She had a certain beauty -- one not noticed by some, but looked up upon by others.

"Hey." I gave her a sleepy smile and brushed a hand back through my hair. She seemed so calm, i couldn't help keeping the same mood. It was nice just to sit there -- the sun was back up and the heat had never left; the grass was a steady shade of green the full length of the football field we sat in.

"Whatcha doing?" I watched her words form, hearing just a bit of sarcasm. One corner of her mouth lifted into a crooked smile, and suddenly i couldn't think, couldn't form words. Awestruck.

"I.." I looked away from her eyes, off into the distance and pulled myself together. She probably already thought i was crazy, she did find me asleep out in an open field. Stuttering and loosing my words wasn't going to help my case of sanity. "Oh, you know, just sittin' in a field. Same old, same old." That's right, play it cool. "And you?" I looked back at her expecting to find her surprised or confused, but she held the same calm and casual look as before.

"Same here.. the usual Sunday morning for me." She gave me the same sideways smile and i could feel heat rising up the back of my neck and into my cheeks. We sat there in silence for a while, and it was nice to simply take in life.

-----

I pulled into the parking lot of Java, the small coffee shop i worked at whenever i had the time to, at quarter to eight. The sun was shining down bright on the pavement in the nearly empty lot, and i squinted against the glare off my car windows when i stepped out. The coffee shop had not yet opened, and not that it really ever got overly busy, but it was nice to be early and ahead. I unlocked the door and stepped inside, switched on the lights and coffee pots. I fixed a cup of coffee for myself as soon as it was ready, needing it greatly. Then I grabbed a small pastry and sat by the cash register to sort out my morning.

Believe it or not, the football field of GCHS is not one of my favorite sleeping places. Usually i prefer my own bed.. except for last night. And that girl -- what was her name? She was so.. interesting. Unusual. Beautiful. I mentally planned to return to the track after work. If nothing else, I could just run a few laps -- not that i was actually expecting the miracle of seeing her there again.

A glance at the clock told me ten till eight. I mindlessly walked from table to table, cleaning and resetting tables and chairs. My first crush on a girl was in second grade. Her name was Tina. She had long black hair, and i would always catch myself watching her across the playground, knowing i wanted to hang around with her but not knowing how. In second grade i didn't exactly understand the concept, i simply thought it I was just like everyone else when i liked my friends. Around seventh grade was when i started thinking of myself as a lesbian. I was proud to finally know, and even then it took adjusting to really feel comfortable. Freshman year holds a big time mark -- my first real girlfriend, and then soon after i began coming out to my close friends. I'm now a senior, and much has changed since my lonely days of gazing across the playground. I've dated a few girls, but never truly fallen in love. News spreads fast at GCHS, and most everyone who knows my name at the least also knows that i like girls. Not that anyone really has a problem with it.

The ring of the opening door startled me as Jen walked in, carrying her gym duffel on one shoulder and one of those eco-friendly grocery bags, full to the brim with dough and coffee beans, on the other. We smiled goodmorning to each other, and I made her a cup of coffee while she unloaded her groceries.

"Want to help me with the pastries? I've got a new idea for the recipy! Grab the flour."

I opened up a cupboard and reached for the flour, barely catching it as it slid off of a shelf taller than me. "What's your new idea for the pastries?" I asked, putting the flour on the table next to her. Jen was one of my best friends; she was a few years older than me but wasn't controlling or ordering towards me like others could sometimes act. Jen started working here a few months before me, and showed me around. As i got used to the place, her and I took more hours, and are now the two "most important" employees. First ones to unlock the doors in the morning, and lock them at closing time. This job was Heaven -- working with someone you love, in a place you love, doing what you love.
