"Are you hungry? You've been poking around your plate all night." My grandma looked at the plate full of untouched food. "Did school go well today?"
I looked up at my grandma to see if she was concerned or growing angry. She seemed concerned. "I don't know if I should talk about it since it's almost forbidden..."
"You can tell me whatever is on your mind, Yvette. If you're bothered-"
"Frankie and I are going to the enlistment office to find my father's address. The county office gave me everything but that. I know you don't want this but-"
My grandma pushed herself from the table and collected all of our plates. All though I knew I'd get my appetite eventually, all the food was thrown in the trash. "Go to your room. Now! I can't even believe you would go behind me and do something like that!"
"Every person deserves to know their parents, grandma!" Even though I felt like I was one hundred percent in the right, so did she. Her back was to me to show she wasn't listening any longer. Eventually, I left the table and went to my room.
The doorbell rang moments later and I knew it was Frankie arriving too early as always for everything we planned. I rushed out of my room to see my grandma was already talking to him. To my surprise, she let him into the house. "Yvette! Come here, please!"
She didn't have to say it twice. I rushed into the living room and sat right next to Frankie. "Yes, grandma?"
"I'm going with you both. If you're going to find your father, I need to be there because... just in case you get hurt." She moved to the kitchen to grab her car keys and purse then was the first out the door.
Frankie and I followed behind her with caution since she still walked with a bit of anger. I didn't want to make any sudden movement that would set her off.
Once we were in the car and down the road, my grandma was eyeing us down from the rear view mirror. "So, who's idea was it?"
"All Yvette. One thousand percent only hers."
I frowned while looking upside his head. "Gee, Frankie. Life is just too short ain't it?" He wiped the sweat from his brow. "Anyways, I found my mom's old journal. She spoke a lot about Philip and I knew he must have been my father... after a bit of a debate. You guys told me a lot about him but, why didn't you tell me he was white... and crazy?"
My grandma wanted to throw her head into her hands but she was too occupied with the road. "After your father, your mother had this breakdown on how white people are the most dangerous in the world." Frankie quickly tensed up. He then started playing with the brown loose curls on his head to act like he wasn't really listening. "I didn't want his actions to have the same effect on you."
"I obviously don't hate white people. I'm dating one and best friends with his friend." I softly nudged Frankie while sending him a smile.
"Yvette, I told you all you needed to know and that still wasn't enough. You want to look this man in the eye and I don't think it's a good idea." She warned me. "I do these things for a reason."
Frankie looked at me with worried eyes but I wasn't backing down from this. Everyone knew who this man was except me. Why is that fair? "Seeing him is not the end of the world. I just want to know if he cares about me."
"I could give you the answer to that, sweetie." We were already at the enlistment office to get information on Philip's whereabouts. My grandma looked back at us as if she was waiting for something and I realized she wanted us to get out. "I'll go park. You guys go on ahead."
I followed Frankie into the building that wasn't crowded at the least. The first person we bumped into was a woman in an army uniform probably trying to leave. "Hello, ma'am?" Frankie started. "We are looking for where we can get information on a former army member. Things like an address or a phone number."
"The information office is straight ahead. Just tell them what you told me and they should be able to help you. Good luck."
I wasted no time speed walking to the office in front of us. We were the only ones in here and I couldn't wait any longer. "Hello! I'm looking for information on Philip Hill."
"Name and date of birth." I gave him the information he needed and the man immediately shivered in his uniform. "This guy. We don't usually keep tabs on men like him who served for this country but I'll see what's the most recent information we have for you. Are you like his..."
"Daughter."
"Ah, okay. Well, if you're looking for an address, we have two on file but he's been vacant from both of them. Let me see what I can get from my superiors and I'll get back to you." He left his chair to head to the back of the office.
A part of me felt like this was the dead end. I wasted everyone's time these past few days by traveling all over Tulsa just to find someone who most likely didn't want to be found by me. "I'm going to cry." Frankie wrapped his arms around me before I could break down any further. "If they don't have anything about him then all of this was a waste."
"You knew more about him than you knew a week ago. Plus this was a nice little way of us spending time together. Like our first-" He stopped talking to step out of our hug. I turned to face the counter and saw a different man approaching the desk.
"Yvette Walson?" The man looked her up and down before smiling. "Good news. We've found your father."
I almost jumped out of my skin. "Really?! Where is he?"
"His address and phone number were updated to our blacklisted former members. The only way we can give you that is if you have proof you're really his daughter."
My certificate was clenched in my hands. For the first time, it held a lot of meaning to me. "I have this." I handed it to him and in return, he handed me everything I could have asked for. "Frankie... this is it."
"Good luck kid." The man passed me back my birth certificate then walked away. He was almost like an angel. My angel.
