“Aaqib, pack up the cardigans too. We’ll need it when the weather gets cold. You don’t want to freeze to death, do you?”“Don’t forget my boots as well. I can’t walk on their filthy grounds. Change some of the clothing items too. We should not look wretched. I’m far more important for those ominous look. You also need to look every inch my son. Exchange the wristwatches for the golden ones with carats”. Abdul Ahad, Aaqib’s father kept going on and on. This isn’t a new sight in his household. It happens every time he wanted to travel within or outside the country.
Aaqib face contorted in anger. He’s finally had it and he will give his peace of mind to this man who thought everyone was created on earth to serve him. It doesn’t matter that he was his favorite son; he still treated him like his doormat. However, before he got to the terrace where his father is sitting while giving him several instructions through the cell phone, he rearranged his expression and pasted on his smiling face back. “Sir, I wanted to ask if I should bring your newest praying mat in case you needed to say your prayers in the main mosque”.
That wasn’t his intention at all but he realized that arguing with his father will get him nowhere. He’s the only one that tolerated his father’s bullshit and even though he can be annoying sometimes, he’s the best father in the world to him. He loved his father so much that he wished he could display his affection in public. Unfortunately his father has a different view on how the family should be treated. He even insisted that none of his children should call him daddy. The name is just Sir, he had said that when one of his children who was in elementary school at the time came home and told his dad that their class teacher demanded for the name of his father.
“Do you need to ask? Of course you need to bring it along”. He replied Aaqib.
Aaqib turned back to the room to continue his endless chore. “I don’t know when I will ever learn. I should have known that going to him was a mistake and I didn’t have the nerve to argue with him”. He muttered to himself.
Three hours and several packing later, AbdulAhad and Aaqib were finally ready to embark on their journey.
AbdulAhad is a man with low self-esteem. During his younger years, he was a very attractive man and women pull to him like a moth to a flame even though he was dirt poor. Along the years, he was able to make a name for himself but with the arrival of his wealth, his beauty receded. A reason Aaqib associated with age but AbdulAhad insisted that his beauty had been swapped for his wealth. Some people also believed that he must have used his beauty for riches. No matter how much AbdulAhad spent on eating balanced diet, taking good care of his health and using different beauty and facial treatments, he got uglier. His money couldn’t buy him what he desired the most and he almost turned to plastic surgery but rather than swaying in the direction, he finally settled on buying himself glamorous attires.
This is why whenever AbdulAhad needed to embark on a journey where it’s possible that new sets of people might comment on his appearance, he would go mad on cloth selection. He’ll pack the best of his clothes, shoes, wristwatches and so on and whosoever tried to help him in packing would bear the brunt of it. He thought that if he couldn’t do anything about his facial appearance, he would at least dress so expensively and glamorously, people would be tempted to associate with him.
AbdulAhad and Aaqib needed to travel to Wushishi in Niger State to honor a business contract he received two months ago. AbdulAhad has chains of businesses all over Nigeria but his building construction business earned him his riches and he wasn’t about to part with it. They should have left earlier for the journey but AbdulAhad over-packing habit had caused a delay in the time of their journey.
AbdulAhad is aerophobic and unless it’s absolutely necessary, he preferred to travel by land which is ironic seeing has he also own an airline.
