Elizabeth Boland was without a doubt one of the strangest people he had ever met. He'd only known her six months, but somehow she had managed to get under his skin. On top of it too. He couldn't afford to let it happen again. The people he ran with would take a single glance at her, her with her strawberry blonde hair, her with her persuasive blue eyes, and understand right away how she was his blind spot. You can't afford to show weakness in his line of work. He knew that. His first mistake had been letting her see Marcus. Ever since the boy had pestered him about the nice lady in the park who made him cookies. Elizabeth had caught on to his son's taste for the treats and started wordlessly giving him bags of them at drops to bring home. His second mistake was taking those cookies, the ones she made especially for him, home to Marcus, where he would immediately offer to split it with him. And how could he say no? There were no words between them, but they both knew how significant it was. But life goes on. It's lonely at the top, and it has to stay that way.
