Resplendent: A stand on The LGBT Community
By: Mizuki Magdula
"My silences had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you". People all over the world are suffering from discrimination and torturing violence. People who've done nothing wrong and no harm to anyone, living peacefully amongst themselves are being brutally punished and criticized on a daily basis. And for what? Because of their gender, because of their identity, their preference, and sexual attraction. The usage of religious scriptures against one's rights, society's hostile mindset, judgements everywhere they go and the application of laws are only few of the struggles that members of the LGBT encounter every day. They have their rights too!
It's nothing rare that people would automatically pull out the scripture card when against topic brought up of homosexuality, saying that it's going against the bible and that being of a gender other than the one you're given by birth is a sin. I could confirm that there are scriptures mentioning about such but just a reminder that Jesus never said anything explicit about same-sex relationships or transgender people; using the Bible as a source of authority to offend/harm a neighbor goes against God's will and is an abuse of using the holy book (Greenough, 2020). Moreover, Galatians 3:28 states that 'There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus' the Lord has always been very accepting as per in his eyes, all he has created are made to his likeness and are perfection.
Personally, I think it is very brave of the LGBTs to stand up for themselves and going on rallies to fight for their rights and to be accepted by society. There is no wrong with what they're doing, long as they hadn't caused harm to anyone so why is society so agitated? They are people too, and if one can't respect them for their gender, respect them as a human being. Acknowledge them like how you want to be acknowledged. Is it too much to ask for some respect? This is the harsh reality of society...yes, you can depend on them to pull you up but it may also be what drags you down. It's easy to say that we won't have to need anyone's acceptance if we're confident but lives are at stake. Many are killed for being themselves and showing their true, beautiful colors.
At some point, I'm sure everyone had fallen in love and that goes the same for them too. They just love, not even expecting to be loved back or accepted. The concept of love has broken boundaries of status, age and so. How about breaking that boundary much farther and normalizing homosexual love? For some countries, same-sex marriages are being pushed forward to by the community. Love is love, there shouldn't be any boundaries. They do not fear the church, they want getting married in it because they are aware of its glories, they feel welcomed by the Lord but constantly, people are against it.
Thus, I believe even the LGBT community deserves a stand on their rights too as human beings, as citizens, as a member of the society and as children of religion. Remaining in silence will not protect us, speaking up will; issues are happening everyday to these vulnerable people but they're not giving up just yet. They will continue fighting for their rights, aiming to live better and in time I pray, society would finally accept them.
