When they walked into Tommy's office building, her expression still must have been troubled as Lizzie shot her a look that was filled with worry and sympathy,
"Would you like some tea?"
"Yes, please, Lizzie" Tommy accepted her offer as he guided Josephine into his office.
Once they were inside his office, Tommy guided Josephine onto the couch in his room, passing Teddy over before he sat next to her, letting her rest against him as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and rubbed small circles onto her arm with his thumb. They sat in silence until Lizzie came in with the tray of tea and she gave Josephine one last imploring yet sympathetic look before she left them alone again.
Figuring that Theodore wasn't going to wake up anytime soon, Josephine bundled him up in the blanket that Tommy had nearby and placed him in the corner of the couch, putting her coat next to him as a barrier in case he rolled in his sleep while Tommy made her tea the way she liked it.
As she sipped her tea, Tommy told her about how May would be dropping by to discuss a horse she was training for him but truthfully Josephine wasn't paying attention as she was slowly nodding off against his shoulder, Tommy noticing just before she spilt her tea over her. He swiftly pulls the cup out of her hands places it on the coffee table before he manoeuvres her so that she laying down on the couch, he wraps her coat that was previously being used as a barrier around her before he collected Teddy into his arms and made his way out to where the secretaries were.
"Lizzie, I need a favour"
Lizzie looked up at him with a questioning brow, "What do you need?"
"Josey is sleeping and I need you to just look after Theodore whilst I'm out. I shouldn't be long."
"Of course, give him here" Lizzie held out her arms and eagerly took Theodore into her arms.
"If he wakes up whilst I'm gone, don't wake up Josey unless he's crying"
And with that Tommy leaves the building, the door shutting behind him with a soft bang.
As Lizzie looks down at Theodore, she thought about the time she wanted what Josephine currently had, she wanted the marriage to Tommy, the lovely house in the countryside and the adorable children but the past two years had shown her that she hadn't truly like Tommy, not in the way she thought she did. She thought that being with Tommy would bring her the happiness she had always desired but in reality, all she wanted was stability and Tommy had given it to her just not in the way she expected. Tommy had given her a stable job and she had her own house and she was free to go find a partner if she wanted but currently, she was fine being single.
There was a time, years ago when she was mad at Josephine, it was just after she left England and Tommy was a mess, and she was so angry at the woman who caused him pain even though she knew it was purely the consequences of Tommy's actions but logic failed her at that moment but now whenever she saw Tommy and Josephine together, she knew that she wouldn't have come close to what Josephine means to Tommy. She saw the way Tommy looked at Josephine when she wasn't looking and the way they looked at each other in general was filled with so much love and adoration and now, of course, they have their son, Theodore and Lizzie thought they were a pretty good family.
Lizzie snapped out of her thoughts as Theodore shifted in her arms, and she looked down at him hoping that he hadn't woke up because she had little experience with babies, especially crying ones but luckily he was still asleep so Lizzie shifted into a comfortable position and began to read the newspaper with her free hand, waiting for either Tommy to return or for Josephine to wake up.
Thirty minutes later, Tommy returns with May Carleton trailing behind him and Lizzie couldn't help the way her lip curled at the sight of the woman. May gave her a bad vibe and she couldn't bring herself to her.
