As soon as the elevator doors slid open, Hak stepped inside. Instead of following behind him, Kija stayed in his spot and squinted towards the retracting doors. His eyes skeptically skimmed over the elevators perimeter.
"This...box is pulled down by nothing more than a pulley. What makes you trust it's mechanism?"
"Just get in." Hak answered with dry irritation.
"Hmm," Kija took a tentative step forward. "Yona did assure me of its safety. Who am I to doubt her judgment?" He rolled his shoulders, pushed his chest forward and marched to the spot next to Hak. With his hands placed behind him, he turned to face in the same direction as Hak. The elevator doors slowly retracted from the sides. Kija's eyes subtly follow their movement. The doors fully closed and the elevator jolted in an upward motion before moving downwards with a low mechanic humming sound that filled the box.
The elevator lights suddenly began to flicker but neither Kija or Hak made any indication of noticing as they maintained their upright position and stoic expression. They sustained this position even after the elevator started to jerk. It jerked three times, with one especially high ear-splitting mechanic screech, before it halted to a complete stop.
This time, the flickering lights didn't turn back on. A moment of silence passes before Kija finally speaks up. "This is normal correct?"
"Nope."
Hak turns on a flashlight and studies the buttons on the control panel. "I believe this has a weight limit, you must have broken it.
"What!" Kija raced forward to look at the panel. His eyes fell to the area that was being lit by Hawks flashlight. Kija's face scrunched up in a horrified expression. "My weight is nowhere near 6,000 pounds!"
"Exactly, that's why it broke."
"What do you- Hak! My hand doesn't even weigh that much!"
Instead of meeting Kija's exasperated expression, Hawk lowered his flashlight to look at the rest of the buttons and labels. "It's not the weight of your snake hand that I'm worried about." Kija, who was utterly perplexed, was about to respond but Hawk cut him off. "They have an emergency button that sends out an alert. Looks like the only thing we can do is wait for help."
"This- this is preposterous. We can't waste time here! Lady Yona is waiting for us!" Kija takes out his dragon hand and was about to slash the elevator doors but Hawk quickly jumped in front of the doors with his hands raised to stop him.
"Hey! If you do that we will have to pay for the repairs and we are not in a position to afford that."
Kija, who still had his dragon hand raised in a slashing position, rolled his eyes. "That's hardly important. Yona gave us direct orders." He pulled out a bag that he had been holding in his other hand. "Every second we spend in here is a second where she has to endure her pain and agony. She placed all her faith in us to end to it and you dare fail her because of the," he makes air quotation marks with his fingers, "economic expenses?"
Hak gave him a blank look. "All she said was that she wondered what a croissant tasted like. You're the one who misinterpreted it as an order."
"She didn't have to give it! I could feel her yearning."
Hak pushed his hair back in frustration and pressed his back against the door behind him. "Why did I agree to come with you?"
