Welcome to Scaveland

Scaveland was an odd place. It was a remote island, hidden in the dense fog of the Unknown Sea. Hardly anyone could ever find it, so well concealed it was. The people there were rather old fashioned. They wore robes made of animal skin and wool. They braided their hair with clay beads and shells. The elders had various superstitions, some rather crazy and unheard of.

But despite all this, Scaveland was a good home. The younger generation was educated. In fact, their education surpassed even ours. They know everything about the outside world and how it works. A child around twelve years of age there can speak at least five different languages.

The food was sufficient. Numerous herbs and crops grew on the island. The fish were in abundance, and almost every family had cattle of their own.

The people, however, are ever-changing. They are both greedy and selfless, stupid and cunning, friendly and hostile. Visitors weren't welcome. The only good-natured souls found in Scaveland are the children.

But one thing that makes Scaveland the most interesting place in the world, is that it has magic.

Not ordinary magic. Uncontrollable and unpredictable magic. It doesn't come from people. The magic is the elements of nature: fire, water, air, and earth. They have a mind of their own, and they do what they think is right. They might bring hurricanes, earthquakes, bush fires, and droughts. Or they might bring perfect sunny weather, a slight drizzle for the crops, lush green fields for cattle, and just enough bonfire for warmth.

In Scaveland lived a girl. Wendy Darling was her name. She wasn't an ordinary girl. Oh, no. Far from it, actually.

Wendy Darling could control elements.

She was, as the Elders call it, the Blessed One. Her mother was the last Blessed One until she died in a horrible accident.

Wendy Darling had two brothers, Jhon and Micheal Darling. She loved them dearly, and they were perhaps the only ones who actually loved her. You see, when her mother passed away, Wendy's father immediately married Valerie. The pair hardly cared for Wendy but adored Jhon and Micheal.

Wendy was rather popular with the island folks, what with her being the Blessed One. Her life was far from perfect, but she thought herself lucky to be living like this. Yes, being the Blessed One of Scaveland had its perks.

But it also had a few disadvantages.

You see, a challenger could always come and duel with the Blessed One. The person who wins keeps the other's power to control elements, making them further powerful. There hadn't been a duel in Scaveland since Wendy's mother, Rebecca. She had come from a distant land and challenged the last Blessed One and had been triumphant. When she passed away, her powers were passed on to Wendy, much to her father's scorn. He was hoping it would pass onto one of his sons. Alas, his only daughter became the Blessed One, forcing him to keep her with him.

Wendy excelled at school. She had a decent amount of friends. She didn't starve. If you ask her, she would say that her life was perfect.

Until that red-headed boy showed up.
