i first saw her at the dance,

her hair undone and her eyes wide,

blinking quickly and unsure

in a simple green dress.

i had to do a double take,

just as my friends

attempted to lure me out

of the decorated gym.

i stopped in my tracks.

she was so beautiful,

why did no one

offer her a dance?

she looked around her

and sat down on bleachers

to the side of the room.

she seemed lost.

my friends called to me,

trying to drag me away,

but i can't go;

i have to dance with her.
