You x It

I imagine this monster as a variation of wild-mutt from the Ben10 series except smoother, pinker, and with a tail and sharper teeth.

-------------------

Another night of nightmares.

You awaken with a gasp, sitting up fast.

There is sweat on your brow.

Wipe it off with the back of your hand.

You go get some milk from the fridge despite being exhausted.

Milk's supposed to help, right?

Maybe the 64th time will work.

You gulp down the milk and head back to bed.

"You're safe now," you tell yourself.

You're safe now.

The next day.

Your eyes are black and dry.

Coworker asks if you're okay.

Yeah.

Sure.

You set the soup cans upside-down.

The next day...Another round of nightmares.

Yet you go to work.

You put a gallon of sugar in your coffee.

Coworker: has something for you.

A trinket.

On a string.

Thanks?

Coworker: supposed to give you good dreams.

They saw it in a little curio shop.

Smile.

Thanks.

That night.

You place the little trinket on your bedside table and close your eyes.

And dream of candy.

Sweet, sugary, mouth-watering desserts and treats.

You could almost taste it.

Morning.

You wake up well-rested. For the first time in what feels like months. Your eyes are no longer dark and dry. Your head is clear and your mouth is...sticky?

Sticky.

You lick your lips.

It tastes of lollipops.

You frown.

You wash off your face with a washcloth but can't help but notice the red stain on your lips.

At work.

Your coworker is pleased to hear your night's sleep.

You don't mention the sweetness on your tongue.

The next night.

You brush your teeth while staring at the little figurine. You pick it up and it smiles back at you with sharp teeth.

This is the thing that's supposed to prevent nightmares? More like give you nightmares.

Nevertheless, you leave it on your bedside table.

And you dream of eating sweets. Cupcakes, doughnuts, chocolate eclairs....they melt in your mouth. Then your naked body is bathed in warm chocolate, covering you from head to toe. You swim up and gasp for air but realize you are not drowning. You are in a pool of chocolate now. You tip-toe your way to the edge and find an under-chocolate ledge where you rest.
