Riverly Friendship

There once was a deep, blue river that ran throughout the valley. It had the most majestic fish, the ones with yellow and pink scales, or the ones with beautiful long streamer fins.

One day a little boy with tears on his cheeks ran to the river after his lesson. He sat on a plump rock and cried.

"Why don't I have any friends?" He asked. He didn't expect a reply, for it was mostly to himself. He wiped his wet cheeks with his hands and looked at the river.

"You have me, don't you see?" A smooth voice said.

The little boy looked around in bewilderment.

"Who said that?" He asked.

"Who else, but myself?" The smooth voice sounded female, and familiar.

"Now I'm confused, who are you?" The little boy asked.

"It's not so much as who I am, as what I am," it said.

"So you are not a person, how can that be?" The little boy was very confused now.

"Well look around and what do you see? Practically nothing, but you do see me."

The little boy looked around once more and saw nothing but the river.

"Are you the river?" He asked.

"I am the river, of that I'm sure, but why do you cry on my shore?" The river said.

"I have no friends river, I am alone," the boys eyes start to moisten again.

"Oh my, don't cry. There is already enough water here."

The boy laughed a little.

"And you have me, don't you see?" The river asked.

The boys face brightened up, "You'll be my friend?"

"Until the very end." The river replied.

Ever since then, the boy visited the river everyday. They talked and laughed and had great fun.

Days, then weeks passed, soon turning into months, then years. The boy visited everyday.

Then on his seventeenth birthday, he met a girl. They were great friends, that soon became lovers.

The boy had still visited the river everyday until he turned eighteen, when he married the girl.

The boy didn't visit the river for two months, he was too busy working. Then his wife left him, for he was too poor.

The boy, who was now a man, went to the river. He sat down on a plump rock, and cried.

"I have no one left, they have all left me," he sobbed.

"You still have me," said the river. "Can't you see."
