"The most exciting attractions are between two opposites that never meet."
-Andy WarholRain walked around the campus, occasionally chatting with people he had either met or haven't as he paraded, ehem. He strolled towards his next class with people giving him a path.
Rain had thought that it was just a normal day, like any other day. He smiled at the girls that had waved their hands seductively (an everyday occurance).
He tugged the hem of his orange shirt which was under a teal colored jacket.Rain noticed that the grass seemed to be fresher, and the skies shone brighter. He smiled and looked down to see a small girl, hair as black as a raven's feather and cold blue eyes that gave out a tantalizing yet peculiar feel. She wore a dark dress decorated with frills, with sleeves which were colored white. Her appearance made her look like a living doll. And weirdly, her skin was so pale, like it wasn't even humane.
The students looked terrified, like they had seen a real life horror scene.
"It's the hollow." The others whispered as they did not dare to make eye contact with her.
"The hollow?" Rain thought to himself, but as he looked down again. The girl was already giving him death glares, and for once in his life, he had experienced fear enough to give him shivers down his spine.
"How long do you plan on hindering my path." She said, it didn't even sound like a question. It sounded more like an insult to his pride.
Rain moved away before he opted to ask for her name.
"What's your name?" Rain called out, the whispers had gotten louder and were more like murmurs.
The girl had stopped, her black dress swaying with the wind as her straight ebony colored hair shone under the bright sunlight making it stand out.
"Shine." And with that she had walked away, leaving everyone dumbfounded.
The two split paths, Rain thought of his first meeting with the nonchalant 'Shine'
Rain looked at the girl who looked like an apparition in far sight. It creeped him out, but for some reason. He... wanted to know her more.
It was strange, but Rain knew that this wouldn't be the last time they're seeing each other.
The students had crowded around him, telling him about the hollow. Rain learned that the 'so called' hollow was named Shine Rencé, he found it oddly familiar, Where did he hear it from again?
"Shit, I'm gonna be late!"
The trip towards his next class was luckily not too far, and as he arrived he noticed that all the seats were taken except for one seat; the seat beside Shine. It was obvious that people avoided her like a plague, but who were they to blame?
Rain gulped a large amount of saliva and courageously took the seat beside Shine, to everybody's dismay.
He uncomfortably adjusted himself as Shine looked straight ahead.
"Hi." He greeted, almost croaking at the fear of whatever may come next
"Hn." She mumbled as she tore a piece of paper and scribbled on it.
'Don't. Talk. To. Me.'
Rain looked away and pretended he didn't say anything, the class had went on and he thanked the heavens that they were dismissed early.
----
It was the end of class and surprisingly he found out that Shine was in all of his classes, how could he have not noticed? It was like she had blended in the background for who knows how long.
He looked behind him to see her grab the sketch pad on top of her table and walk directly towards him, making him take two steps backward.
He gulped as her figure was near him, she stared at him and nodded, walking away afterwards.
He took a deep breath and slumped to his seat. She was becoming creepier and creepier by the minute. It was as if all his curiosity about her disappeared into thin air, and all he wished was for her to stop scaring him.
"Rain is there something wrong?" Timothy asked, Dominick came into view with his yellow checkered long sleeves rolled up.
"Heard that you've met the 'hollow' " Dominick chimed in as he brought an arm to his twin. "So how was it?" He asked, a hint of mischief present on his tone.
"It was horrible, for one minute I thought she was interesting but it just, I don't know man. She scared the living shit out of me." Rain answered, his best friends laughing at his answer. "But somehow I'm still curious about her, even if just a tad bit."
"Well let me give you a dare." Timothy placed an arm on Rain's right shoulder, smirking.
"We all know that you're the most gentlemanly and most popular guy in school right?" Timothy explained, attracting Rain's attention.
I challenge you to be Shines friend and make her smile, and if you succeed. We'll do anything you say." Timothy said, Dominick looked bewildered. "Dude what if he asks us to dance naked in front of the whole campus, don't drag me into your stupidity Tim."
"Oh come on Dominick, you're always chickening out. Besides, we all know that you're quite interested in Shine, admit it. It'll be like seeing rainbow unicorns if we see the 'hollow' smile. Timothy snickered, causing Dominick to blush.
"You traitor, that was supposed to be our secret!" Dominick punched Timothy causing Rain to laugh hysterically.
"I'll try my best in befriending her." Rain smiled, seeing it as a very interesting mission.
Rain walked away, waving his hand for a goodbye.
Rain immediately went to the parking lot to ride his sleek red ferrari.
----
It didn't take long before he had reached their humble abode. He parked his car and walked towards their villa, passing through the red roses that were planted at the corner. He was shocked to see a black shadowy figure in his peripheral vision.Thinking that it was just his imagination, he went inside only to be greeted by both his parents.
"Oh son, you're just in time." His father, Nicholas sprang up. Awkwardly smiling at his son while his mother looking stiff. The atmosphere seemed heavy, but Rain shrugged it off.
"This is odd, why are you both here? I thought you were on a business trip?" Rain asked, unbeknownst to him a figure was watching from behind.
"Well, you see I have a really close friend whose going around the globe for awhile. So..., he had asked me to leave his daughter here for the mean time while he's away. Haven't I told you about this?" His father pointed behind Rain, as Rain looked back.
"She's Shine Rencé, and she'll be living with us for awhile."
'Shine.'
'Shine.'
'Shine Rencé.'
And that's when Rain lost it, that's why her name sounded familiar.
Shine looked at the three, looking nonchalant as her mouth was spread in a thin line.
"Well anyways, we expect you to take care of her since we'll begin our business trip around the parts of Europe as well." The two laughed nervously. "Don't tell this to anyone, it's confidential information dear." With that, his parents had magically grabbed a handful of luggages rushing out of the house leaving him alone with the enigmatic girl.
Rain didn't expect his mission to begin so early, and as he looked behind him, Shine was already looking at him as well.
"You look like an idiot." And with that she walked away leaving him speechless.
"Its gonna be difficult for sure." Rain thought as he looked at Shines shadowy figure disappear.
