Mankind was always known for its long-term issue of inequality — so when Quirks came into the picture, things did not exactly get easier. Roughly 20% of the population was not as lucky as the remaining 80% when it came to inheriting these unique powers that showed up in the world out of the blue, leaving them a subject to cruelty by those who thought highly of themselves for having flashy abilities, or just having one at all. But with the surfacing of Quirks came a new profession, one that people thought only existed in comic books; superheroes, whether intentionally or not, stole the spotlight from mundane cops — or, at least, when it came to the villains that antagonized them.
Yamaguchi Rina could remember the first time her Quirk manifested. She had been challenged to a race by her annoying classmate in kindergarten because he wanted her juice box, and whoever won would claim the aforementioned as a prize. She was so intent on winning that something in her sparked — and a mere second after taking off, she was meters past the finishing line. I mean, sure, she ran face-first into the wall and saw stars for the rest of the day, but at least she won, right? Unfortunately, Shinji, being the snot-nosed shitface he was, stole her juice box anyway, told her she would never get into U.A. because he said so ( even though she never mentioned it, literally not once, but okay, Chad ), and ran away. Rina never saw him again. She still has nightmares.
A decade later, in which Rina spent those ten years filming her training montage to prepare for the moment she would get her sweet revenge, she was granted acceptance into the most prestigious heroics school in Japan by recommendation — having three heroes and a side-kick for aunts might have had something to do with that — but Rina was hell-bent on proving Chad wrong. She could have gone to any other academy, or just settled for a mundane job, but considering all her life decisions were based on doing what others told her she couldn't do, U.A. was the fate she unwillingly resigned to ( she's a liar: she, very willingly, chose to be that much of dumbass. or maybe it was a genetic thing, or a curse bestowed upon her by the gods ).
As time passed, Rina realized she should have read the fine print on the "Are You Sure This Is A Good Idea?" contract when she started spending 60% of her time at U.A. running away from an underground group of villains that seemed to be convinced her late father was the Japanese version of Dr Doofenschmirtz that would bring an end to said group of villains. And when she discovered that her aunt had an undying crush on her homeroom teacher. But mainly the villains part. Probably. In truth, she didn't know what was worse. But what else would go wrong, am I right?
( it was moments later when Rina discovered the answer to that question was only everything )
