the crisp air soughed at dawn, filling ushijima's lungs with it's exhilarating coldness. it fluttered through his hair as he gazed, olive eyes reflecting the ocherous sunrise.
he was on his usual morning jog, stopping once in a while to admire the appealing daybreak that seemed like a captured painting put on display. but he didn't let it lead him astray, he had to follow his schedule like he had done for the past years.
dusting his shiratorizawa jacket, he continued jogging with the morning melody's of crickets and birds cherishing his ears. it would always calm him, refresh him. a chance to feel free from the shackles of pressure and stress that had him stressing each minute of the day.
it wasn't usual, though it wasn't unusual either for people to be awake at this time. so when ushijima's phone vibrated in his pocket, while he took a swig of his water, his expression was slightly confused. it would either be his mother or tendō. the latter was as unlikely as the first. those were the only people who had his number after all.
he carefully got his phone, checking the caller id of the person calling him. he recognised that an anonymous person was face timing him. his confused feeling etched away into one of slight happiness, though by the look of it he remained in a stoic state.
he thought back to the miyagi prefectural qualifiers where he confronted oikawa tooru, a well esteemed and clever acquaintance of his. he had passed on his phone number in any case he wanted to change schools and instead attend shiratorizawa. he would make a great asset to the volleyball team.
ushijima paused his morning jog to attend to the face-time. instead of the face of oikawa tooru on the screen, there was a cow. ushijima raised an eyebrow, the only clue to his mild surprise and confusion.
the cow stared into the screen and after the unsettling silence let out an agonisingly long 'moo'. usijima's face contorted to one of stoic concern. it was as if he had understood the cow was seeking help and asking for ushijima to free him from the farm he was kept on. yes, he gathered all that from just one 'moo'.
ushijima spent hours somewhat conversing with the cow, which happened to be british. but eventually he had to end the call and return to his school for it would start in half an hour. with a brief goodbye to the cow, he tucked his phone back in his pocket.
he now had a new meaning in life; another goal to accomplish, another ambition to full fill. he was going to find and free that cow from its miserable life one way or another.
"wakatoshi-kun, you seem to be distracted today. unusual, what are you thinking about?" tendō tilted his head in question as he stared at the stoic boy who seemed lost in his loose thoughts.
"i am going to rescue all the cows in the world; starting with bob." he replied, his gaze hardening as he stared off into the distance. the red head tilted sat up attentively with a lazy grin on his lips, "oya? who's bob?"
"did you know that ushijima actually once face timed a cow? it's, well his, name was bob from what i recollect..."
