Chapter 2
***Flashback***
I had never been one of those people who hated the rain. Honestly, I can't understand why someone would. I don't know what brought on this feeling though. Maybe it was my childhood, where I had been tucked away between the rolling hills on the eastern coastline of India. We had lived just on the outskirts of the city, one block from the beach. I was really thankful for that when the sweltering heat of the summer started to set in, I don't think I would have been able to survive without the cool breeze blowing in through the windows.
On some days during those hot summer months, we would get lucky and the sky would overcast, saving us from the piercing rays of the sun. On others, we would get even luckier and it would rain. It was never just a light drizzle either, it was always a full blown thunderstorm bringing with it an immense amount of rain over the course of a few days. Yet those monsoons were some of the best memories of my life.
I remember that one particular summer...
Most of my family had gathered in my grandma's house, which was right down the street from mine. I was walking barefoot along the flattened road, bouncing from side to side to avoid standing in one place too long and burning my feet. I was wearing worn in jeans and a bright yellow t-shirt with a lone flower on it, a welcome change from the boring navy-blue and white uniform that I had to wear to school. I usually spent most of my time at my grandparents' house, following them around and watching them do grown up things like cook and read the newspaper.
When I got there, I was excited to finally be able to play with my cousins. My relationship with my two older cousins was more like that of brothers and sister, because we were always fighting and making up. I never would take any of that back though, because it was all innocent fun. I enjoyed every last bit of it. That afternoon, I sat on my mom's lap, listening to everyone talking, but not understanding what they were talking about. The sweet aroma of fresh flowers, which were pinned in all the ladies' hair, swirled around me. I enjoyed listening to them, the way they spoke about things I hadn't even heard of always left me wondering about what was out there in the world.
After lunch, we had all noticed that the dark clouds were coming in and I crossed my fingers, hoping that it would rain. I could practically smell it coming, It's an unusual talent that I have. I went onto the flat terrace of my grandparents' house, climbing up four flights of stairs in the process. I sat there, waiting in anticipation until it finally started. Immediately I ran down to tell my cousins to bring the football (soccer ball) up so that we could play. My grandparents protested, yelling at us to stop because we would get sick, but we payed little attention to their warnings...there was a game to be played.
Pretty soon almost everyone was up there, including our white labrador, Robin, playing an intense game of soccer in which there were no teams. Just a wild free for all, water splashing everywhere as everyone threw their feet around, hoping to get the ball. I hadn't gotten to kick the ball yet, all these big people were getting in my way. My brow had knit it determination as I ran towards the ball. I kicked it hard, and it went soaring towards the goal and hit it with a loud thwap. I was so proud of myself, and apparently so was everyone else because they were cheering like madmen.
At that moment, everything felt perfect. Not because i had scored a goal, or because they were cheering me on. It was because they were all so radiant. Happy to be with each other, to be a family. I saw happiness dripping from their brightly colored clothes, which, although wet, were never dull. They remained brilliant, like they were being powered by the wide smiles that graced everyone's faces. Hell, even my dog was happy, probably the happiest of us all. Just content to be beating all of us losers at football, and vigorously wagging it's tail as we chased it around and around. I just stepped back and watched as it all happened in front of me. At that carefree moment on top of my terrace, being drenched in the sweet monsoon rain as the sun dipped into the ocean in front of me, i felt an unusual sense of giddiness. For some reason, I couldn't bear the thought of looking away.
***End of flashback***
