chapter 1

"Watch it, spaz," A voice says, pushing past me in a harsh and jarring manner.

The impact so rigid, I nearly stumble over my own two feet as I make it to a clear seat. "Oww," I whine, looking up to see none other than the biggest jerk I had ever known.

Harry.

"Fucking jerk," I mutter, throwing my bag onto the table from over my shoulder; rubbing to induce the on-growing pain.

"What was that?" Harry cupped his ear as he took a seat a few feet away from me, "Did you hear something, Jake?" He said to his friend behind him. I roll my eyes, annoyed to his childish behavior per usual. Something I hadn't grown used to in the last six years.

Harry was a jerk. No doubt about it. He was always mocking, teasing, pushing, and annoying nobody but me. He loved sleeping around, not just every weekend but presumably every second of the day. That's about as much I could say about him, because it's all I knew, let alone wanted to know about him. However, that's all I know about the new him.

He wasn't like this up until we began high school.

Harry and I were best friends growing up. He constantly teased me and made fun of me back then, but not as cruelly as he does to me now. It was probably the feeling of being a high school-er and wanting to make your mark that made him the way he is now. Only I had hoped he'd shed that phase after freshman year. But due to his success of people looking up to him and treating him like royalty, he'd only gotten worse.

"No, definitely not. It was probably a breeze," Jake said sarcastically, playing along with Harry who patted him on the shoulder in gratitude.

Then there was Jake of course, who was Harry's trustee sidekick. I don't really know him personally, since I had only spoken to him once in the middle of all four years of high school. He seemed nice, but it wasn't until Harry took him under his wing and the two became best friends instantly

The dynamic duo began to laugh and soon started cracking jokes, mocking me to amuse themselves during the spare time that we had.

I never really understood why people looked up to them, just because they were the star athletes of the school. It didn't mean much to me how everyone praised them, practically kissing the floor they walked on. Mainly Harry. They only praised Jake because he was close to Harry.

I roll my eyes, grunting as I rubbed my shoulder, pouting to myself as I looked around the room for my best friend.

Looking up, I glance at the clock, hoping time would pass on quicker.

"All right, everybody. Settle down," Mr. Adams, our environmental science teacher announced catching everyone's attention, "Do I have all permission slips for the camping trip? Any late slips won't be accepted," Mr. Adams said sternly, looking around the room as he began to make a head count. "Remember to make sure you have all of your bags near you at all times. I will not be held responsible for you losing personal items."

It was the senior year camping trip, and I was partly excited. Not only was I able to experience the wilderness and environment, but I was able to get away from home and my annoying little brother. At the same time I wasn't that thrilled since Harry and Jake decided to tag along, as well.

I was shocked for one. They were both too self centered, I didn't think they'd ever be interested into doing anything that didn't have to do with themselves.

"So, you ready?" My best friend, Mikaela asked, plopping down in a seat beside me.

I look at her, relieved since I thought she wasn't gonna make it, "I think so. I'm just not excited about knowing we'd have to spend a whole week with Harry and Jake. They're so annoying. It's five in the morning and they already have the energy to annoy me."

"Ignore them, they're idiots," Mikaela muttered, looking over her shoulder to find them talking among themselves, "I'm surprised they even wanna spend their weekend outdoors. How long do you think they'll last until they find out there's absolutely no service up there?"

"Probably until we hear cries and complaints about not being able to receive nudes due to lack of signal," I say laughing.

Mikaela laughs alongside me. I catch Harry's eyes on us but he looks away immediately when I spot him, "Do you think we'll be assigned partners?" She asks.

"I sure hope so," I sigh, "Mr. Adams is the one who assigned partners, so we'd be lucky if we get paired up."

Ironically, Mr. Adams calls our attention once again.

"All right, I have the assigned partner sheet right here," Mr. Adams announces, flailing the flimsy sheet of paper in mid-air. "I'll call out names one at a time, you and your partner will obviously pair up as soon as we make it to the campgrounds. Ready? All right, let's begin. Andrew and Joshua. Ally and Emily..." He begins to call names together one by one by same sex gender.

I hear Mikaela's name being called and unfortunately, my name was not called afterwards. Instead he calls one of the weirdest girls in our entire class grade, Miranda. She was really nice but really strange.

Mikaela gives me a frown, sarcastically crying, "This sucks, I officially hate Mr. Adams. He can suck on a chode for all I care, he knows I don't like her," She spits, crossing her arms angrily.

"What did she ever do to you?" I ask in empathy, scowling at Mikaela to keep from making rude remarks towards Miranda.

"Remember sophomore year, that science fair with those worms? And then a few of them ended up in my hair?"

"But she didn't do it on purpose," I shrug.

"I don't care," Mikaela holds her hands up in surrender, "I refuse to share a cabin with her."

I held back my laugh until I heard my teacher call my name. I look at him expectantly then furrow my eyebrows as he shuffles from paper to paper.

Finally, he let's out a relieved sigh, "Here we go. Ah, Ms. Reagan... You'll be paired up with... Harry." He said, slamming his clipboard to his chest with a wicked look on his face.

My jaw drops, eyes widened in horror. Many people looking back and forth with a confused look on their face. Mikaela is looking at me with a worried expression. I'm unstable, unsure how to take this or even comprehend. This is a dream. It has to be.

Before I'm able to protest, Mr. Adams turns back to his desk, scattering more paper here and there.

I glance at Harry who was grinning to himself before he glances over at me. I stormed off to confront my teacher. There was no way I was sharing a cabin with Harry. Anyone but Harry would be perfect. I'd even be willing to negotiate on extra credit work or even switching with someone else.

When I approach my teacher, he's already putting away his files and items.

"Mr. Adams?" I say a little nervously, hoping all goes to plan. He glances up at me with lazy eyes, he was clearly exhausted, "I'm sorry to bother you but.. I think there's been a mistake. For one, I hate my partner. And two, does this mean I have to bunk with him? All the girls are partnered together as well as the boys by same gender..." I state, Mr. Adams looks at me with a raised brow, "Why are me and Harry the only boy and girl partners?" I say pouting slightly, hoping he'd switch me with someone else such as Mikaela. Let Miranda deal with Harry, instead.

He sighs and flashes me a lazy smile, "Well, as much as it pains me to pair you up with him", Obviously not, "There were simply no other pairs of the same gender for the both of you, I'm sorry, Ms. Reagan," Mr. Adams says as he begins to walk away before I'm able to protest, "All right everyone, let's get going."
