My eyes snapped open as I heard a scream rise through the empty halls. I
listened in the darkness as footsteps quickly grew in volume heading towards my wing of the abandoned safehaven. I rose to my feet cradling Mason and scrambling to find my gun. A bang shook the weak doorframe and vibrated throughout the crumbling building framework. I cast my eyes at the door knowing it wouldn't hold for long. I rushed to the corner and softly placed Mason down covering him in blankets and my bag hoping he would he well hidden should anything happen to me. My thoughts raced as another bang shook the building. I brandished my firearm and stood prepared to defend to my last breath when a final crash split the door in half, breaking it off it's rusty hinges. The click of the safety being turned to red sent a chill down my spine. The gun felt like it weighed a ton as I pulled back the hammer and aimed it at the intruder. I fired into the darkness feeling the recoil shudder through my body shaking my bones and sending my brain into overdrive. I watched in the muzzle flash as something large crawled through the broken door on legs like a spider. I unloaded my remaining five shots into it only to see the creature continue swiftly towards me in the blinding light of each shot. I screamed and sat up in my sleeping bag feeling my shirt soaked with sweat and heartbeat like a shotgun in my ears. I quickly clawed through my belongings looking for my phone and turned on the flashlight to see Mason on the other side of the room staring at me with a concerned expression painted across his face. I crawled over to him and scooped him up feeling my fear melt as he looked up at me. "You really did get her eyes" I smiled and gazed into them. I checked the time and saw it was 2:45am, I set him in the sleeping bag and stood up to think. I walked about the room pacing, terrified in not knowing what I was going to do for money. I stared at the door, worried that at any moment it would be torn off the hinges by the monster in my mind. I laid back down setting Mason on my chest and feeling my heart continue to race. This was going to be a long night. I woke up to sunlight streaking through the boarded up window. I sat up and waited for my vision to clear as they adjusted to the light. I glanced around the room to find it the same as every night, empty and cold. I stood and tugged on my shoes feeling my numb, cold feet shoot pain up my leg in protest. I packed quickly, egar to get the hell out of the corner I had backed myself into. With a heave I pulled the heavy frame away from the door and opened it slowly, peaking into the empty hall. I walked back the way I came and crawled through the window to begin my long journey to the highway on foot. I felt the cold bite at my neck as I turned my collar up and quickened my stride. Hopefully someone would feel generous enough to pick up a hitchhiker today. I walked along the highway with my arm extended and thumb standing at attention. I kept replaying in my mind how in Hell I got myself in this predicament when a car horn ripped me from my thoughts. I snapped back into reality and saw a black suv pulling into the grass ahead of me with it's hazards on. I approached the passenger side and peered through the glass into the car. A man in his late fifty's sat in the drivers seat with a expression that can only be described as eagerness. He lowered the window and stared through me for a minute before speaking as a smile spread across his lips, "need a ride?"
