Lizbeth was running, but she didn't know where she was going. She only wanted to escape the monsters. They were chasing her. They were fast. She hid in the mansion. They came for her. She had nowhere to hide. Six of them slammed the door and stormed inside. Their skin was purple, like grotesquely distorted dogs. Lizbeth didn't even have time to scream. The Howlers tore her apart and drank her blood. Then they continued to kill everything in their path. Lizbeth Covenant woke up shouting. Eliza heard her from the next room and went inside. "Is it a nightmare again, miss?" she asked anxiously. Lizbeth nodded. "Rest," the maid suggested. The girl leaned back on the pillows. She always had nightmares. She dreamed of either these purple monsters or the long-dead monks who had lived in the monastery near the mansion before.
She didn't know where these dreams came from, but she sensed that they might have something to do with the ritual she and her siblings had performed on Standing Stones Island. She was sick now. She knew she was dying. She used to love reading books at the family mausoleum. She had discovered this place, and it had become her sanctuary. Her mother (who died giving birth to Lizbeth) was buried there. Lizbeth could not get out of bed. Her time was running out. But today she was determined to end these nightmares. She planned to go to the entrance to the catacombs of the monastery alone and see what energy was causing these night visions. Lizbeth rolled back the covers and got dressed. She left the house and walked to the mausoleum, where a boat was moored. The young lady had never used a rowing boat. Besides, she wasn't strong enough, the disease had taken away her strength. But Lizbeth got into the boat and started rowing. When she reached the shore, she was completely exhausted. She lay down on the ground and stayed there for a few minutes. The weather was not cold. When she could walk again, Lizbeth began looking for the entrance to the catacombs. But she didn't find it. Apparently the monks had covered the place where the dead were laid. Lizbeth walked around the convent, but found nothing to worry about. She decided to return. She was starting to feel sick. The girl got into the boat and could barely get back. She entered the mansion through the kitchens. Her brother Jeremiah was there. He saw the condition of his sister: there were green spots on her dress (where she lay on the ground), her hair was disheveled, her face was white as a sheet, and she was trembling. Then she fainted. She didn't even hear Jeremiah shouting at Eliza to come.
Lizbeth was running again. This time, however, her brothers and sister were there. But they did not run away with her. Jeremiah had his back turned and did not want to look at them. A black cloth was lowered in front of Bethany's face, hiding it from her sister's view. Aaron was naked and his skin was peeled off, showing his organs. Ambrose had long, ruffled hair and aimed an ax at Jeremiah's neck. Lizbeth was afraid of them.
She ran, but fell, and a Howler pounced on her. While the monster was eating her, the singing of the long-dead monks spread around ... She woke up again, but couldn't get out of bed. Lizbeth rang the bell and Eliza came. The maid looked awful. It was as if she hadn't slept. She brought food and water to Lizbeth, but the girl did not touch them. Later, her brothers and sister came to visit her. Aaron sat next to her, telling her why he liked the woods in the fall. Bethany gave her a beautiful and interesting book, from her favorites! Sometimes Lizbeth missed the moments with her sister. Now Bethany was very closed and hardly left her greenhouse. Jeremiah (who was also ill, but no worse than his sister) sent his father Joseph gifts for Lizbeth. Joseph Covenant also stayed a while and talked to his daughter. There had always been something strange between them. Something that separated father and daughter. However, Lady Evaline had died, giving life to Lizbeth. But now Joseph was sad because he saw that his child was dying. He wanted to save her, but he couldn't. Lizbeth had always loved the family mausoleum. As a child, she went to read there and stayed all day. Now, dying, she thought she would finally get back there. This time for eternity. As soon as Eliza entered the room, Lizbeth asked her to bring her a glass of water. She knew it was the time. The convulsions began. Her head shook, her limbs froze. Her eyes turned back. She was dead.
Eliza entered the room and screamed, seeing Lizbeth's body. Aaron heard it from his studio, and soon the others came. The priest, Father O'Leary, said his prayers. Lizbeth was returning to her sanctuary. A procession of people dressed in black carried the coffin. Ambrose opened the crypt door and the procession placed the coffin inside. Then Ambrose slid the latch and locked his sister's crypt. Everyone came out. Only Jeremiah remained inside. He felt a strange shiver for a second, as if something was trying to make him open the crypt door. He froze for a moment, but then it passed and Jeremiah came out.The whisper had already begun.
She opened her eyes. She found herself in the mausoleum and for a moment was afraid she could not breathe.
But then she realized she didn't need to breathe. Lizbeth was in a tomb in the mausoleum. She broke the stone lid and left, surprised by her strength. The monsters of her nightmares approached her. But now they were not her enemies. They listened to her obediently. Lizbeth was hungry. As a child, she had developed the habit of biting. Then she had started walking to the mausoleum, and that seemed to be over. Now she wanted blood and flesh again. Lizbeth mentally urged several Howlers to come with her and headed outside. Her limbs were crowned with long claws, she was dressed in white and very pale, as she noticed in the moonlight. The gardener was packing his tools in the shed when Lizbeth jumped on him. He didn't even have time to scream. She gritted her teeth around his neck. Blood flowed down her, and she liked that. Lizbeth and the beasts finished their dinner and disappeared into the dark night.
Jeremiah, now cured of his illness, was sitting in his room looking at a picture of his family. Lizbeth was so beautiful! Suddenly he heard a strange howl from the garden. He couldn't see, but he thought it might just be either a wolf or a banshee. Suddenly a strange, grotesquely distorted image of Lizbeth popped into his mind and hooked him viciously. Whatever Jeremiah and his family had done to themselves and this place was not harmless. And he knew that wherever Lizbeth was, she was not far away. And she was not dead.
