Y/N worked at the coffee shop down the street from my apartment. I thought she was beautiful. Which, of course, made me stutter any time she took my order. The more and more I came in while she was working the more she talked to me. At first, it was just simple things. Like, what my name was. How my day was going. But then, she became more intrigued. Asking me what I was reading. Or where I was always rushing off too. The less busy it was, the more we talked. I really did like talking to her. And I thought maybe she liked talking to me too.

One day, as she handed me my order, I noticed a series of numbers scribbled on the top of the cup with a message:

Call me sometime?-Y/N:)

I was way too nervous to actually call her. So, I just waited until the next morning to talk to her. I always came in fairly early, so it usually wasn't too busy.

"Hey, Doc. Usual?"

"Y-yeah. Um, Y/N?"

"Hm?", she turned towards me while jotting something down onto the cup.

"Would you want to--go out sometime?"

Her cheeks turned rosy and she smiled, "Yeah."

"Are you free this weekend? At...6?"

"I-yes. Just could we make it later, like 8? Sorry."

"Sure, no problem."

"Well, then I'll see you at 8, Spencer."

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/N had called at around 6:30.
"I am so, so sorry. I just have this stupid cold and I don't wanna get you sick and--"
"Y/N, it's ok.", I tried not to take her cancellation personally.
"Spencer...I don't want you to think that this is my way of rejecting you. Because it's not. I promise. I was looking forward to going out actually. I--I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry. There's always next time."
"Yeah.", she sighed but her voice quivered slightly.
"Are you o--", a door slammed in the background, making her inhale sharply and hang up the phone abruptly.
I know I probably shouldn't have pried into her personal life. But doing what I do, what happened on the phone was concerning. She had given me her address so that I could pick her up. I couldn't have forgotten it, even if I wanted to. So, I drove to her apartment. It sounds weirder than it is. I swear. But when I went to knock, I heard shouting inside. One voice was distinctly Y/N. The other male. And...crying?
"You can't just decide you want to see him again! You're the one who left in the first place!", it sounded like things had been strewn across the ground, "Stop it! You're scaring him!", her tone shifted dramatically, "It's alright honey. I'm alright."
"I'm his father!"
Wait, what?
"I don't care! You signed the papers giving up your parental rights!", there was a pause but the crying increased, "Don't touch him! He doesn't want you!"
I knocked on the door. The chaos ceased for a second.
"Who the hell is that?!"
"What makes you think I would know?!", Y/n cracked the door open and stepped outside, "Spencer?"
It was then that I notice the source of the crying. Y/N was holding a small child in her arms, bouncing him up and down on her hip in attempt to soothe him, "I--sorry. I just wanted to make sure you were ok."
"Oh--yeah, yeah. We're ok. And--oh, God! I am so sorry. I shouldn't have lied about being sick. I really was looking forward to seeing you though. It's just...kind of--hard to explain this whole thing to someone. I would've told you, I swear!"
"It's ok, Y/N. I'm just glad you're--you're both ok."
"Right, sorry. This is Ash."
"Mama? Mama ok?"
"Yes, sweetie. Mama's ok.", the small boy pointed to me and looked back at Y/N, "That's Spencer. Spencer's nice, I promise."
He looked back and forth between us, mouthing something. Almost like he was trying to say something, "Th--the--Thencer?"
I smiled at the mother-son duo.
"Yeah, yeah! Good job, honey!"
"Ya know...we could still--um", I could feel my face start to heat up, "we could still go out? We could bring Ash with us?"
"A-are you sure?"
"Only if that's ok with you."
"I mean--yeah. But we'd have to take my car. And God, I look awf--"
"You look beautiful, Y/N. You always do."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I came back home to see Y/N sitting on the couch with Ash beside her. She was holding his little baby photo album.

"Oh! Spence, perfect timing.", I kissed her softly before sitting on the other side of Ash.

"Alright, baby. Who's this?", she pointed to herself in the photo. It was from Rossi's Christmas party, Ash had turned two a few weeks prior.

"Mama!"

"Good! Now...who's this?"

"JJ!"

The cycle continued going around everyone. Ash had stumbled on a few of the names but he got the gist of them.

"Who's this?", she pointed to me in the photo.

"Dada!", I swear I thought I was gonna cry.

"Did you teach him that?", I smiled.

"Uh-uh! I was holding him in the kitchen--trying to get a bottle and he pointed to the picture on the fridge and said it!"

I kissed Ash on the forehead and started tickling him just to hear his giggle. What I heard was 1000x better.

"Dada! Dada! Dada, thop!", he pouted between giggles.

When I first went to Y/N's apartment, I was worried I made the wrong decision. I can now confidently say that that was the best decision I've ever made.
