wine stain
by louis tomlinson

the thing about wine is that when you spill it, the stain lingers
no matter how much you try to cover it
place your hand over it, tell your friends it was just you being clumsy
the aftermath is always there

with the way you spilled it over and over
it was like you didn't even care anymore.
the stain didn't bother you, because you were spilling on something worthless

you were always drunk off of anger
about anything i did wrong
to the point where i would collapse over the thought of picking the wrong shirt to wear
the wine didn't intoxicate you, though
the wine isn't an excuse.

i don't know who told you kissing wine stains makes them better
makes them hurt less every time i even blink
but it doesn't.
it only reminds me of what you did, of how you were so careless as to ruin something forever
something everyone knows you can't restore

i still flinch whenever someone holds up their glass
afraid of another white carpet being soiled
even when they've never spilled something in their life
i can feel the dread run through me

now i'm hopeless
scared there will never be someone else
at least, someone who knows how to keep their wine in their glass
nobody wants to buy something that's already stained
except people who always spill
