Almost

He almost smiles when he hears her voice.

It almost happened when she was yelling profanities at him.

His sister is finally home and for a second he forgets that he is fighting for one.

He almost tells her he cares.

It almost happened when they were both sitting at the foot of the stairs, exhausted from fighting.

He wants to tell her what he thought she knew – That the only way he knows how to protect her is how he protects himself. He has told her countless times throughout centuries that no one was and will ever be good enough for her.

And he meant it.

Killing people who might hurt her is the only way he can protect her.

He almost tells her he cares, but he doesn't.

''… I am executing the plan the only way I know how. If you don't like it, there's the door. See if I care.''

He almost apologises.

He realises that giving up Elijah was foolish.

But Elijah is a fool. And so is Rebekah.

That is why he, Niklaus, is the most feared and respected vampire.

Not Elijah, who is stupidly predictable.

And certainly not Rebekah, who has fallen in love more times than he has killed.

They will both be the death of him someday.

But no one else can ever know.

Not even them.

He almost daggers her.

Again.

It almost happened when she was yelling at him.

Again.

He found the daggers she stole from him under her pillow.

Silly little girl.

This witch she is talking about erased her memory and could potentially harm her.

Rebekah would be safer in a coffin.

He'll wake her up when this is all over.

''How many times will Elijah forgive you? How long until his hope for your redemption finally dies?''

He almost daggers her but he doesn't.

Instead, he puts the daggers back under her pillow.
