The long dream

“If you are reading this then you have been in a coma for One hundred Eighty two years. We are trying to figure out why. We’re trying a new technique to wake you in today’s advanced age. We have no idea if we’re getting through, or when it will arrive. But please wake up. The Astralis need all the help it can get.”

An image flashed through my mind. It read this. I sat up and shivered. One Hundred Eighty years, that was a long time, but what are The Astralis? A kind? A company? I was at a complete loss.

This is a dream.

It can’t be-

I couldn’t quite believe it, but I wrote down the message in my notebook to analyse later. If this was going to be my last day in my ‘simulation’ then I was going to spend it well. I stepped out of bed and headed downstairs. I always felt like something was off about this world. Until today.

Today everything changed. I hurried outside after hastily dressing, to my friend's house. He greeted me with a hug and whispered in my ear:

“What’s wrong, can you tell me?”

We broke apart and I did. I knew I could trust him. When I had finished he stared at me then ruffled my hair and laughed.

“Maxwell Sycamore! This is no laughing matter! I need your help, and I need to say goodbye. I hope you exist in the real world, you’re a good friend” After ‘goodbye’ my voice became weak. I couldn’t bear the fact of leaving all these lovely people in my dream, my world but I have to go.

* Two hours later *

I had sent a message to all my friends to meet me at the park so I could explain. Maxwell already knew but the other two didn’t. I laid in the field, amongst the daisies when Phoenix came into view. They knelt up beside me, dressed in comfortable looking khaki bermuda shorts and a cotton tee. Maxwell layed down opposite me, his feet touching my shoes. Five minutes later Audrey came hurrying over to our group apologising for her lateness.

Damn I loved my friends. They were all amazing people and they deserved to live in the real world, not this ‘simulation’

“I have something important to say. I wouldn’t have called you if not.” I took a deep breath. “I have been sent a message by ‘the real world’ telling me to come back from my dream. Goodbye, dear friends, I have been lucky to know you. I hope to see you again.”

My friends stared at me with sad expressions. Phoenix sighed and said,

“I knew this day would come soon. I knew you’d realise sooner or later. It's been 182 years, It's time to return to your Earth. Goodbye, nice knowing you”

Everyone else echoed their words and disintegrated.

I opened my eyes. A man leant over me and said: “Welcome back Agent Silas, we missed you.”
