Summary: An au where Ben works at a coffee shop and Kenji becomes a regular after Brooklynn brings him there once. Totally because Kenji loves coffee and not because he may or may not have a small thing for the barista.

"Brooklynn, where are you taking me?" Kenji got his hands loose from the pink-haired friend of his.

"We're getting coffee!" Brooklynn exclaims, throwing her hands in the air as they approach a Starbucks that was only a few minutes away from her NYC apartment. Dragging him through the doors, a bell rang-signaling to the workers that they had guests. To Brooklyns surprise, her regular cheery barista named Sammy wasn't there. It seemed like all the country girl did was work. Good she has a day off, brooklynn thought. Kenji and her walked up to the counter. There awaited a guy around theirs and Sammy's age with dirty blonde hair and a nametag that read Ben in very neat print.

"Hi! Welcome to Starbucks, what can I get for you today?" Ben asked quietly. It was only his second month working there, and this is his first time they put him on the schedule for more than just weekends. He doesn't know that his manager knows of his mother's passing, and his manager also knows Ben needs help with money. So she scheduled him for thirty-six hours, Sammy donating several hours of hers to Ben.

"I'm gonna have a grande cold brew with ice. No cream or sugar, but can you add cinnamon dulche cold foam?" She smiled, as he put her order into the computer. "Please." She smiled again.

"Absolutely! And for yo-" Ben could hardly finish his sentence as he got a good look at Kenji. Ben gulped while clearing his throat. "Uhm, f-for you.." He finished.

"Uh..." Kenji looked at their menu board, not comprehending half of the names. "Surprise me?" He said, face full with confusion.

"I will try my best." Ben smiled, typing in an order Kenji assumed was his surprise. The two took a seat at a bar in front of where the baristas make the drinks, so they could watch Ben at his craft. Ben had made Brooklynn's fast, perfecting the cold foam for the top. But when it came to Kenji's, Ben had no idea what to make. With a lot of hesitation, he made Kenji his go-to. A grande blonde roast with oat milk and light ice. He hesitantly handed the drink to the boy who he realized was watching him. "Hopefully it's okay." Kenji took a sip and his eyes widened.

"This is amazing! And I don't even like coffee!" He shouted, taking several large gulps of the iced coffee, and he finally set it down. "I will be back, hopefully soon-I'm gonna need a whole gallon of this." Kenji said smiling, as Brooklynn got down from her stool, paid Ben, and slowly started walking away. Kenji and Ben looked at each other in silence. Ben smiled, turning around to clean the equipment as he heard the bell for the exit ring, and looked back to see no Kenji, but instead a five dollar tip with a piece of ripped of shiney paper. Ben looked at the receipt printer, to see a piece had been ripped off. He looked back at the spot where the tip laid.

"Come to hang with me and some friends tomorrow? -Kenji" Followed by his phone number and- "Is that a dinosaur emoji holding a thumbs up?" Ben questioned aloud, putting the not in his pocket, blushing like crazy.

.

Right when he got home from work, Ben fished in his pocket for the note Kenji had left. He couldn't stop thinking about it all day.

Unknown Number: hey, its ben from the coffee shop :)

Kenji: hey barista dude! did you consider my offer?

Kenji changed Unknown Number to Ben the Barista Dude.

Ben the Barista Dude: ya, it sounds pretty fun, what are the plans?

Kenji: sick, so I was thinking I could pick you up around noon and we can go meet some friends at Brooklynn's house?

Ben the Barista Dude: sounds cool, ill see ya then :))

Ben laid down in his bed, now in pajamas, clutching his phone to his chest. Huge dopey grin, and a blush spread across his freckled face.

.

The next day, Ben got off his opening shift at eleven and sprinted to his house. He changed into a pair of jeans and tucked in his favorite blue button up. He looked at his fanny pack, then at the mirror, then back at his fanny pack. Ben ditched it, he can't see why, but for some reason he wants to impress Kenji. He heard his phone chime and decided it must've been Kenji, so instead of answering-he walked out of his apartment and from the top of the steps, he could see Kenji sitting in a very clean VolksWagen Jetta. He kneeled down and knocked on the car window, and on cue Kenji unlocked the passenger door. Ben took a seat and tried to make himself as small as possible, as to not crowd Kenji.

"Hey coffee dude." Kenji smiled.

"How are you?" Ben smiled back.

"You know, livin the life. And by that-I mean I have two essays due tomorrow." Kenji sighed, dramatically switching lanes. "And to my suprise, You only live a block away from Brooklynn." Kenji gestured to the white house with columns out front, that's squished by boujee looking apartments. Kenji parked and rushed to Ben's side, opening the door for him. Ben's eyes widened, no one's ever done that for him.

"Thank you, kind sir." Ben smiled, bowing as he stepped out. The two boys stepped out as Kenji knocked on the door, earning a very fast reply as Brooklynn opened the door. "Kenji! And starbucks guy?" Brooklynn smirked. "Jeez, I know you said he was cute but I didn't know you had enough game to-"

"Shut up!" Kenji exclaimed, pushing past Brooklynn with a flustered ben behind. Kenji had brought him into the living room, where a whole movie night was set up and there were three people about their age sitting on the couch. And funny enough, he recognized one as his coworker, Sammy.

"Ben?" Sammy questioned, sitting up from where her girlfriend and her had been cuddling. "How are you? How's everything been with Beth?" Sammy was the only one there who knew about his mom.

"Uhm, it's okay I-"

"Ooo who's Beth?" Brooklynn teased.

"My mom, she uh. She passed recently." Ben tried not to tear up. Kenji looked sympathetically at Ben.

"Oh my gosh Ben I'm sorry I didn't know." Brooklynn hugged him.

"It's okay, you didn't know. On a better topic, what movie are we watching?" he asked, as Sammy sat back down in her spot and Brooklynn took a seat next to another guy. Kenji and ben had satten on some loveseat cushions that had been strewn about the floor.

"I vote we watch a thriller!" Sammy's girlfriend, who Ben found out was Yaz, exclaimed.

"Like Seven!" Ben and keji shouted at the same time. They had won, and the group gave into their request after minutes of the boys begging in sync. An hour in, Yaz, Sammy, and Brooklynn's friend Darius had all fallen asleep, Sammy snoring lightly. With oly Brooklynn awake, Kenji made a move and wrapped his arm around Ben. And Ben leaned into his warm hold. Looking up, Ben kissed Kenji's cheek, and the taller boy had started to blush. Soon enough, they had fallen asleep and Brooklynn covered the group in her comfy blankets she had littered on the cushionless loveseat.

"Guess you've got some game, Kon."
