A gentle breeze blew through the trees as a boy walked along the forest path, an Eevee named Eve on his head and a Yamper named Sparks by his side. The boy, with dark blue hair and a playful grin waved to all the Rattata and Pidgey he saw. His name was Alex, a boy from the Oren region. He had just come back from an adventure in Kanto, and returned to Oren, his home region. He wasn't just taking a random stroll through the forest though, he was on his way to the airport to pick up his longtime traveling companion and best friend, Shard.

Half an hour later, Alex arrived in Azure City. Walking into the airport he found a spot to wait for his friend, relaxing with the two Pokémon following him. Alex looked down and adjusted the black fedora on his Eve's head.

Walking down the hall was Shard, a girl with short light blue hair. She pulled a blue suitcase behind her, and by her side walked Amber, a Riolu. Alex ran up and they hugged.

"Nice to see you again!" he said, releasing Shard from his hold.

"Yeah, I can't wait to see your home!" she said excitedly. Sparks came up to Shard and barked, wagging its tail excitedly. She picked up the puppy Pokémon and said, "Awww, it's so cute!"

"Like him?" Alex asked, grinning. "I caught it while in Galar for a week. His name is Sparks!"

"Think we should head off now?" Shard asked, putting the Yamper down.

"Yeah, let's go!" The two and their Pokémon left the airport, heading back through Willow Forest. "This was one of my places when I was younger!" Alex said, looking around the forest. "Ooo, let me show you my favorite spot!" He grabbed Shard's hand and started going towards somewhere off the path. They arrived at a pile of rocks half concealed by trees, though where there might've been an opening, there was a fallen tree.

"Oh... The hole is blocked..." Alex mumbled, disappointed. "Oh well, I can show you it another time!" He immediately perked back up with a grin on his face. "I still need to show you my hometown!"

"You're so weird" Shard said laughing at Alex's sudden mood change. She followed him as he went back to the path and on the way home.

They were nearing the edge of the forest, when they started to hear a lot of buzzing. They turned around to see five Beedrill.

"Alex?" Shard said worriedly, while he just stared at them. Then, the Beedrill charged at the two. Just as they were a few feet away, "Eve, use Reflect!" Alex yelled. A light barrier appeared in front of them, and the Beedrill rammed into the barrier. They fell to the ground, and by the time they regained their bearings, Alex and Shard were long off.

"Couldn't you have done that sooner?" Shard yelled at Alex, who shrugged.

"If I did it sooner they would've stopped before running into it." Alex stated.

"You just wanted to be dramatic didn't you?"

"Maybe a little of that too" Shard rolled her eyes as the two went into the town.

They stopped in front of a small wooden house, peach colored like the rest of the area, with a large fenced field behind it.

"Mom! I'm back!" Alex yelled into the house, leading Shard inside.

"Hi son. You must be Shard. I've heard so much about you!" Alex's mom giggled. "He wouldn't stop talking about you since he got back from Alola!"

"Mom!" Alex said, embarrassed.

"Do you have somewhere you're gonna stay?" Alex's mom questioned.

"Welllllll I have a tent." Shard replied.

"Why don't you stay here? I'm sure Alex won't mind sharing his room."

"Mom are you sure?" Alex asked, feeling embarrassed.

"Go show her your room!" His mom smiled.

"Ok..." Alex led Shard off to his room.

"Carrying her bag for her, what a gentleman!"

"MOM!"

His mom giggled, "Alright I'll stop. Dinner will be ready soon!"

Later that night...

Alex lay on a couch in his room, Shard wrapped in a sleeping bag on his bed.

"Alex?" Shard asked.

"Yeah?"

"What's the rest of Oren like?"

"Hmm" Alex thought about that for a second. "I really don't know."

"Isn't this your home region?"

"Yeah, but I never actually travelled around it besides going to Azure City."

"Wow." Shard was silent for a few seconds, then asked, "Do you think we could travel Oren together?"

"Just you and me?"

"Yeah, is something wrong?"

Alex thought for a bit. "Nothing. I'd like to travel the region with you!"

"Let's tell your mom tomorrow!"

"Yeah!"

"Good night Alex."

"Good night Shard."

They both fell asleep thinking about the journey they might have.
