He looked like a slightly older man with smile lines around his eyes, fitting for such a laidback establishment. He poured you a glass of clear liquid and, not thinking much of it, you chugged as much as you can. After setting it down, you noticed the fresh taste in your mouth and stuck your tongue out in disgust. “Water?” you said, nose scrunched up. You were expecting a cup full of gross—but effective—vodka. Like back in your college party days. Not something that would actually hydrate you.“Are you cutting me off for the night?” you said in shock, wanting another drink despite the buzzed feeling already in your head. And that was how, after a few protests and minor whining, you found yourself outside of the bar, muttering under your breath as you walked to the train station that would lead you home. You only made it down two streets, head glaring at the ground and legs swaying slightly from the alcohol you had consumed, before you crashed into a warm, muscular figure. There was a grunt from in front of you and you flinched back, rapidly stepping away and almost losing footing at the speed. Before you could fall backwards, a hand shot out to grasp your elbow and another reached behind your back to help steady you. You jolted at the touch and your gaze shot up to meet the strangers’.When you saw his face, your eyes widened at the sight. Were you drunk and daydreaming? Or was this really the Pro Hero Ground Zero right in front of you? You were a fan of his for a while now, seeing him pop up frequently in new reports— A talented hero on the rise who you found yourself admiring. Although you thought his attitude wasn’t the nicest in interviews, he still seemed like he cared about doing his best, sporting an impressive record to prove it. You found yourself feeling just a little starstruck at running into him like this. When you saw his face, your eyes widened at the sight. Were you drunk and daydreaming? You found yourself feeling just a little starstruck at running into him like this. “You okay?” he asked, snapping you out of your trance. With a blink, you managed to stand upright and regain your balance. As soon as that happened, Ground Zero retracted his hold on you and you frowned at the loss of warmth. Maybe you were just upset that you were supposed to be held that night on your date, but instead got cheated on and have been cold and angry since. “No, actually. I’m not okay! Today was the worst night ever. My boyfriend—well ex-boyfriend now, that pathetic jerk—cheated on me and I haven’t told my friends because I know they hated him and I don’t want to hear an ‘I told you so’ at the moment,” you wheezed to catch your breath, “so instead I went drinking alone in a bar and even the bartender thought I had too much to drink and told me to head home and—”Catching sight of Ground Zero’s alarmed expression, you stopped in your tracks when you finally realized what the fuck you were just doing. He was so going to think you were weird and he probably felt super uncomfortable hearing about a random stranger’s day like that. You were about to apologize for your unsolicited venting when you heard, “Sounds rough.” It came out awkward, maybe even a little forced, but there was an effort made. You blinked. You were expecting an “I don’t care” or for him to just walk away, but you realized Ground Zero had recently been criticized for his general likability by the citizens of Japan. (Well, he had always been criticized for it, but it seems he grew up enough to finally want to do something about it.) “You drunk?” he asked gruffly before you could even say anything else. “So you’re wobbling and clinging onto my arm for balance ‘cause you’re just a little tipsy?” You hung your head sheepishly, not bothering to deny it this time. “I’m drunk.”Ground Zero placed a heavy hand on top of your head—what you assumed was supposed to be a soothing gesture. (A soothing gesture for a kid in grade school, maybe. But since his gloved hand made you feel warm and secure, you couldn’t bring yourself to want to complain.) “That guy—your ex—er, he sounds like a piece of shit,” he grumbled. “You should head home safe. Don’t put your safety at risk for that dumb fuck.”You peered at him through your lashes, touched by his show of concern. Sure, he was probably on patrol and it was part of his job description to make sure the inhabitants in these streets were safe, but you let yourself believe he was giving you special treatment. Maybe it was a bit delusional, but you had just watched your boyfriend cheat on you a few hours ago. This ego boost, though probably misguided, was one you needed right now. “Oh, I’m not worried about that. I’m sure I’ll be safe,” you said matter-of-factly. “Ground Zero is here.” “Tch. What the—?” he choked out, obviously surprised by your sudden compliment. Behind his mask you could barely make out his furrowed brows. “I mean, of course I keep my patrol area safe.” He puffed his chest up a little. “But you can’t be out drunk and sad and alone out here. You know how much danger you’ll attract?”Sighing, you nodded. Of course you knew. You were on your way to the train station until you bumped into him. “Yeah. I was on my way home anyway.” At the dejected tone in your voice, Ground Zero cleared his throat. “Have a friend you can call to take you home?”“I told my friends I was going to be on a date so they all went out tonight too.” You wiped your palms on the fabric of your bottoms. “It’s okay though. I can take the train.”The Pro Hero scratched the back of his head and you wondered how he was even able to move with those heavy-looking gauntlets. He gestured to the direction of the station with his chin. “Let’s go to the train then.” You blinked. “Huh?” With a frustrated sigh, he rolled his eyes, walking towards the train station without bothering to look back and see if you were following. “You’re not sober enough to properly perceive things and you never know what lurks at night. You’re under my patrol area so I can’t just let you go home unattended like this.” Ground Zero continued walking as you raced to catch up with him and match his pace. “Next time, don’t be so reckless.” You winced, folding your arms across your chest defensively. Deep down, you knew he had every right to call you reckless—because at that moment, you were—but it still stung to hear. “Sorry. Next time I get cheated on, I’ll make sure to ask him to give me a ride home first before breaking up with him.” “Didn’t mean it like that.” “I know,” you sighed. “Sorry.” There was no purpose in picking a fight with someone who was just being nice to you. Someone nice who happened to be a very attractive and popular Pro Hero, nonetheless. “Whatever,” he brushed off nonchalantly. Though he looked uncaring, you noticed he slowed his pace and kept his hand hovering over the small of your back to help you walk in a straight line when he saw that you were struggling. “I wouldn’t be in a good mood if that happened to me either.”The two of you made your way to the station with no mishaps on your part, and he even followed you into the train (which was, thankfully, fairly bare due to the late hours of the night). When you told him you didn’t want to bother him anymore than you already have and could see yourself home, he simply scoffed and took a seat right next to you. “Thank you for doing this,” you murmured quietly when there was a lapse of silence on the ride. Even though you didn’t know this man at all, his comforting company was better than being cold and alone after a break up you didn’t see coming. And, thinking more about it, it really was rash of you to go drinking alone at night without even telling your friends. “I know you don’t have to.” “Thank you for doing this,” you murmured quietly when there was a lapse of silence on the ride. And, thinking more about it, it really was rash of you to go drinking alone at night without even telling your friends. “I know you don’t have to.” “What did I tell you already?” he said with a shake of his head. “I have to keep everyone under my patrol safe. Don’t thank me for doing my job.” Ground Zero’s job description most definitely did not involve seeing sad, drunk, freshly-cheated-on individuals to their homes. You weren’t sure why he was being this nice to you—and you were certain he didn’t either—but you weren’t exactly complaining. In fact, you were quite grateful that a hero you looked up to was willing to do small deeds like this. Not every heroic act had to be large and flashy. You sighed. “If only we had more people in the world like you.” He looked at you curiously and you continued, “Instead of people like my pathetic, mean, rude, lowlife, jerk of an ex.” “I’d be glad to punch him in the face if I ever see that loser.” “How romantic,” you cooed. “Though I’m not sure Ground Zero punching a civilian would make for a good headline. Well, good for the tabloids, bad for your general popularity.” “Fuck the general popularity ranking. And if people knew why I kicked his ass, they would support it.” His words were crass, but it somehow had the same effect of comforting you as a hug would’ve. Sometimes, you just needed someone who was ready to offer their support by kicking someone’s ass for you.You smiled. “Thanks, Ground Zero.” Your eyes widened. Was he telling you his—?Yup. Seemed like he was. You supposed he wasn’t such a stranger anymore. “Y/L/N,” you said, a grin on your face. “Bakugou’s a pretty name.”“You’ll have plenty of other times to try in the future,” you stated teasingly, patting the fluffy hair on top of his head. It was a lot softer and less spikey than you had imagined. You found yourself wanting to run your fingers through it. Bakugou raised his brow at you, a look of amusement on his face. “Plenty of other times?” Your cheeks heated as you mumbled, “Yeah.”“Hmm.”The buzz of the train coming to a stop filled the air between the two of you and you were thankful for a break to catch yourself from becoming too bold (only to groYou didn’t expect Bakugou to walk you out of the station and to your front porch home, but you couldn’t deny the warm feeling in your stomach it brought. He didn’t talk much, just voiced some thoughts here and there, but even his presence was nice to be around. w flustered 0.02 seconds after). Other than the admiration and slight infatuation you had with the idea of Ground Zero, you knew you didn’t like him like that. Not yet, anyways. You had just broken up with your boyfriend, after all. “Call me,” he said with his gaze averted, holding out a piece of paper between his index and middle fingers. When did he have the time to write his contact information down? You weren’t sure. But you accepted the slip of paper nonetheless. “You know— If you ever need me to kick your ex’s ass or whatever.” “Or whatever,” you repeated with a smile. “Yeah. I think I will do that.” You both knew that when you called him, it would most definitely not be about your ex. You didn’t want thoughts of him longer in your head than necessary. Instead, it would simply be to invite Ground Zero out for food to thank him for being there for you while he was on patrol.
