I was too stressed after that whole issue with Kimura to make food, so I went shopping. I figured we needed a little bit more food anyway, I don't have any ready made dinners.
And before you say anything, don't judge me. Sometimes I get too into a project to stop and go make a whole dinner, so I have a freezer in the back of the shop full of frozen meals. Whenever I get hungry, I just grab one and put it next to my forge. It surprisingly cooks it through pretty well.
What am I looking for again?
I stop in my tracks, realizing I wandered off into the completely wrong section. I was surrounded by bottles of women's shampoo, along with various sticks of scented... things.
I wasn't very skilled in the area of makeup, unsurprisingly. I only borrow Ruruka's eyeliner, but she seems to get annoyed with me when I do. I always ask if it bothers her, but she denies it.
Maybe she's jealous of my amazing makeup skills
I snicker to myself as I wander back to the food section, fishing around for whatever frozen meal looked edible enough.
What am I kidding, guys can't be good at makeup. Like ruruka said, jts just a girl thing, and eyeliner is easy to have be straight.
Oh! I almost forgot!
I pull out my wireless headphones and connect it to my phone.
With the whole music issue at home, I nearly forgot to listen to my own shit.
I turn on one of my favorite songs at the moment, Runaway Baby.
Like I told Kimura, I like energetic songs. I mainly listen to rock whenever I'm working, mostly cause it's easy to have in the background.
It sounds weird, but it's true. Any other songs just get lost underneath the sounds of the fire and hammers.
Whenever I'm not working, (and no one is around to judge me) I listen to more pop-ish songs. I know, I know, weird, right? What's the Ultimate Blacksmith doing listening to that crap? Tough dudes like me shouldn't listen to that, it's not right.
That's why I only listen to this playlist in person. I'd be a laughing stock if people found out.
I looked down at my basket and realized it was already full.
I started to head back to the checkout, before I halted.
I was forgetting something
What was I forgetting?
We have a ton of ingredients at home, I just came here for frozen shit
.....
Oh yeah, Kimura.
Her whole sugar diet or whatever
Well, I didnt get anything with sugar IN it, right? The frozen foods never taste sweet...
Lemme check the label, just in case.
..
Wait, really? Everything I have has grams of sugar in them?
Why the fuck would my microwave mashed potatoes need sugar
What the hell DOESN'T have sugar in it?
I dont even know where to begin... I'll just ask a cashier lady, I guess.
Or you could just not get the brat food. She'll be gone by night anyway, why should you feed her.
That ruruka voice gets creepier and creepier the longer this goes on
I turn my head to the nearest checkout station, with a sweet old lady sitting behind the counter.
As I walked up, she smiled at me.
"Hi there sweetie," the old lady began. "Did you find everything okay?"
"I'm not done quite yet, uh... do you carry any sugar free foods? I never realized how much was in everything."
She waved a hand at me and rolled her eyes as she spoke.
"Oh, I know darling, it's so hard to find nice organic food these days. Let me find you something."
She began typing on her computer, before looking me up and down.
"So this your first time buying organic? What gave you the idea?"
"Oh, its uh... not for me." I said, before she cut me off.
"Oh, you're buying for a girlfriend? How sweet of you, what a considerate young man you are. Or a boyfriend too, I dont judge"
"No, it's not for my girlfriend. It's... complicated." I winced at the thought of dating anyone other then ruruka. Especially seiko.
"Its ok if you two aren't official yet, sweetie. It's just nice you're doing something for the ones you love"
Before I could get my next sentence out, she finished up her typing.
"Right down on aisle 6, we have a few sugar free food options. Crackers, yogurts, pretzels. Anything you want. Then, over by the wall over here," she motions to the wall behind her "you'll find some cheeses and meats. Look for the ones with the red markings on them."
"Thank you, ma'am." I said as I shuffled off. Girlfriend? Seiko?
No, that's stupid. Anyone with eyeballs could see we weren't meant to be together. Even if you didn't have ears, it'd be pretty easy to feel the tension in the air.
I strolled around the store for 5 minutes, filling another basket with sugar free snacks and food. The ones without sugar are surprisingly expensive, which seems a little unfair.
Just buy her one thing, don't waste your money on her. She got you and Ando kicked out of Hope's Peak, she doesn't deserve food.
That voice was being unnecessarily mean today, even if it was to Seiko. I know I should agree with it, but I couldn't help it. I would be scared for anybody if they were passed out in the park, let alone throwing up on themself.
Even if she was lying about her diet, I'll play her game for a little. At least until ruruka kicks her out.
What if you bought regular food and just SAID it was sugar free, then see what happens if she eats it?
..
That thought scared him
For multiple reasons
Who the fuck would poison food with such a simple thing? It's so petty and trashy, it was almost sickening.
The other thing that scared him was just how against the idea he was. He never disagreed with ruruka (or even this ruruka-like voice) that harshly before.
Why did he have such a violent reaction to that thought? He loved ruruka, didn't he?
That thought made him feel... uncomfortable, to put it mildly. Like something wasnt right, but he didn't know what.
He stayed silent for the rest of his time in the store, up until he went back to the cashier lady.
"Did you find everything ok this time, sweetie? Did you get that cheese I mentioned?"
"Uh, yeah, I did."
"Aw, that's nice. I hope your girlfriend likes them."
"They're not my-"
"I know, I know, you don't like labels."
She scanned my groceries in silence for several seconds before snapping her fingers.
"Oh! I almost forgot! I have a little gift for your 'female friend'"
She winked at me, before turning behind her to grab something out of a bag.
"I bake sugar free cookies for my grandkids! I have a few dozen left over, so you can take as many as you like!"
I look down at the paper bag of cookies, and smile for a second.
This is the sweetest old lady I've ever fucking seen
"Thank you! I'm sure she'll... love them." I stutter hesitantly, before handing her 40 dollars and grabbing my bags.
"You can keep the change for yourself, ma'am!"
"How thoughtful of you young man! That girl of yours is lucky to have you!"
I jog out of the store and take my headphones off, tucking them into a pocket on the inside of my jacket.
Looking at the cookies in the bag, I take a smaller one from the top and bite into it.
They were surprisingly good, actually. Even somewhat comparable to Ando's sweets.
"Me and Seiko.... what a ridiculous thought."
For some reason, though, he couldn't wipe a smile from his face as he walked back to his house.
