Friendship is Magic: Part 1 (Mare in the Moon)

    Her name was Moonshine, and she was alone. Her mother, Nightmare Moon, had always made it like this. That is why she was never that fond of her mother. Moonshine did not get out of her mother's reach very often, which is why she so desperately loved going on adventures. She never made any friends on those adventures. Who could find friends on the moon?

The moon was an empty and desolate place. No pony could ever make it, except her and her mother. The moon was filled with a crater at every turn. It was so dull there, with no hint of color at all. For she lived on the dark side of the moon. She was able to escape her mother's grasp from time to time, and one day she crept away into the light side of the moon.

It was unusual for her to be on the light side because well, she was always on the dark side. It was so much livelier here. She seemed to feel swarmed with happiness. The warmth that covered her body made her feel less tired than she was stuck on the dark side. And the colors... They were bright and cheery, joyous and welcoming to all. She started laughing, letting joy overflow her body. She raised a hoof, trying to grab at the bright colors of the planet miles away from her.

"There!" Moonshine shouted in excitement, "There is where I want to be! Not on this terribly boring moon!" She started to leap, letting her hooves lift of the moon for a few seconds before touching the surface of the grainy moon again.

"Moonshine!" She heard a very angry mare's voice say.

"M-mother," Moonshine quivered in fear.

"Your very, very lucky," Nightmare Moon said dangerously, almost seeming to shake the moon. Moonshine looked back up at her mother. Her head filling to the brim with questions.

"What do you mean?"

"Tonight is the night I return to that dreadfully bright Earth," Nightmare grimaced.

"Really!?" Moonshine said, allowing the joy that was once there to flood her body once again.

"Yes of course..."

A roll of evil laughter boomed from Nightmare Moon's voice, filling the awkward void of silence around Moonshine with its terrible noise.

"Isn't this exciting?" Pinkie-Pie squealed with laughter, "Are you excited because I know I am!" Pinkie jumped up and down with possibly the world's largest toothy grin.

"Oh, Fillies and Gentlecoats..." Mayor Mare started, "It's a great honor to announce the beginning of the Summer Sun Celebration!" Everypony cheered and hooves clomped all about in joy.

"In moments, our town will watch the magical sunrise as we celebrate the longest day of the year! And now, it is my great honor to introduce to you the ruler of our land, the very pony who gives us the sun and the moon each every day, the good and the wise, the bringer of harmony to all of Equestria..."

The ponies seemed to squirm in their positions, excited just to see their ruler. "Are you ready!" Pinkie Pie squealed. Her hooves pounded upon the gray bricks of the street. Everypony started pounding their hooves along with the over-excited pony.

"Princess Celestia!" The mayor shouted while pushing herself off of her two front hooves. Everypony stood quiet, waiting for their princess to show herself in all of her glory.

"Huh, where is she?" Rarity asked, looking around. Princess Celestia, however, was nowhere to be seen. The ponies chattered quietly to each other, nervousness coursing through their nerves.

"This can not be good!" Twilight Sparkle murmured under her breath. She looked at the only familiar-looking ponies she knew. They all seemed to be thinking the same thing.

"Ruh-remain calm! I'm sure that she's just, um, maybe nervous...? Hiding muh-maybe?" The mayor stuttered.

"Oh, oh, Is she hiding? Is this hide and seek? Oh, I love games!" Pinkie Pie screeched, joy making her eyeballs almost burst out of her sockets.

Rarity walked up the stage and peeked behind the curtain. "No! Shuh-she's gone!" Rarity cried. The ponies gasped, filled with shock and fear. Rarity

"Oh, she's alright!" Pinkie Pie thought aloud. All the ponies around her gasped as an unexpected, new pony showed herself. The smile on her face could not be any wider.

"Nightmare Moon, Oh no...," Twilight Sparkle whispered to herself. She wasn't surprised, for she knew that this was going to happen. She had tried to warn the princess, but she hadn't listened. Princess Celestia had just told her to go make friends instead. Spike sighed, he couldn't believe that Twilight Sparkle was right. He thought that it was just some dumb myth.

Twilight inspected Nightmare Moon a bit, only to find that there was a much smaller and meeker pony behind her. "My dear subjects. It has been too long since I had seen your putrid sun-loving faces." Nightmare Moon scoffed in disappointment.

"Where's our real princess?" Rainbow Dash shouted. A look of upsetness crossed her face. She started to scrape her hooves across the concreted ground.

"Calm down there Nelly," Apple Jack comforted, attempting to calm down the distressed pony. Nightmare Moon only laughed as she thought that this was only some joke.

"Am I not important enough for you to remember?" Nightmare Moon shouted. Her voice made the world rumble.

"Oh, is this a guessing game? I love guessing games!" Scowled Nightmare Moon.

Nightmare Moon: Does my crown no longer count now that I have been imprisoned for a thousand years? Did you not recall the legend? Did you not see the signs?

Twilight Sparkle: I did. And I know who you are. You're the Mare in the Moon – Nightmare Moon!

[ponies gasping]

Nightmare Moon: Well well well, somepony who remembers me. Then you also know why I'm here.

Twilight Sparkle: You're here to... to... [gulp]

Nightmare Moon: [chuckle] Remember this day, little ponies, for it was your last. From this moment forth, the night will last forever! [laughter, thunder] Twilight saw a Light Blue Filly Alicorn Standing Next to Nightmare Moon. Twilight Sparkle Question herself: (Who is That Filly I Never Seen Her Before?) Moonshine See a Purple Unicorn Stare at her. Moonshine Ask herself: Why is That Unicorn staring at Me?
